View Full Version : Should my next project be based on RS?

I built a pair of Jubilees and another pair very similar to Curt C's Vertex (but using D25AG and a slightly different cross over). Very happy with the results.

After that I have been busy with planning the basement. But before completing the basement work, I am thinking of building a pair of speakers using RS series (low/mid) Woofer. Not yet sure if I should go for RS28 or SEAS-27TDFC. I have seen a few designs in htguide as well as here including Dr K's.

I am sure some one will soon ask about the budget. I am basically looking for excellent speakers (the best?) using RS. I will manage the budget along with my basement expense! (I know it cannot be exorbitant!)

Any suggestions?

TIA

Hi,

I've been running two-ways together for comparison. Lately a Vifa XT18/Millennium next to a RS150/27TDFC. I'm stunned by the detail offered by the RS in the midrange and its bass capability. The tweeter sounds very, very good, and they image better than the Vifa XT18/Mill system. I still like the Vifa XT18/Mill, but if price is a factor, I'd recommend the RS150/27TDFC or one of the htguide designs.

Do you have details of XT18/Mill design? I want to check it out before deciding on RS. BTW, I am more interested in tower model.

Thank you

Hi, if you send me an email, I'll respond with a diagram of the x-o for the XT/Mill. It only requires 1 cu.ft. ported, so your towers would need some false space.

I have an XT18WH/Hiquphon OW1 design that I'm very happy with. There's a pic below and the details are at the link below under the Asterion Project. The XT18WH is a very nice sounding driver but does have a little bit of extra midrange warmth. However compared to my RS and other aluminum cone designs the Asterions are a bit more forgiving with poorer source material and sound great with just about anything. As I said before they aren't as neutral as some of my three way designs but they have a very musical sound. The soundstage has great depth and three dimensionality that surpasses any of my other designs. They probably could be made into a tower speaker by reducing the depth, extending the bottom of the cabinet and moving the tweeter/woofer up 1" (this would improve the tweeter diffraction a bit if you plan to not use a grill because I used felt around the tweeter to compensate). Jeff's design might be just as nice or even better too.

Jeff, what do you think of the Vifa XT18? It has gotten mixed reviews by different people but most are very impressed with it like I am. I've concluded that paper type drivers are my favorites due to their versatility and smoother sound. I think the main reason why I prefer paper is that they have more lower (even) order distortion which is easier on your ears while metal tends to have more higher order distortion relative to paper which can tend to sound a bit more harsh and more easily detectable (I hope I have my facts right).

So I just thought I'd offer my project as a suggestion because the OW1 isn't quite as expensive as the Millenium and I'm very happy with these speakers. However, the crossover is very critical in shaping the sound of a set of speakers. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Jeff,

Could you send my your crossover design as well. I also have a Vifa XT18 design (posted in the message below) using the OW1 instead and am curious to know how your woofer filter compares to mine (I'm a crossover nut). I'm also curious to know what you think of the XT18 as well. I like mine very much but find that the midrange is a bit on the warm side which gives them a more musical sound but they are still very detailed and have a soundstage that is very deep and three dimensional. If you could give me your baffle dimensions as well that would help because I could determine how the baffle differences might affect the sound compared to my design with at 10" wide baffle. Thanks in advance.
