View Full Version : Subwoofer Suggestions

I have been working on designing a powered sub for a friend to use for music and home theatre in an "average sized" living room. At first I had a great design worked up using the new Dayton RS HF 12 in a 2.7cu ft ported box but he wants something smaller. I plan on using a 500 watt amp. My best options at this point are:
- Dayton Titanic 10" in a 35 l box ported @ 22hz
- TC Sounds TC2+ 12 SVC in a 36 l sealed box using some low end boost from the amp
The Titanic beats the TC in max output below the mid thirties, it's ahead by 5 db at 20 hz. The TC beats the Titanic above there and is ahead 3db at 50 hz.
I am looking for any comments on these enclosures or suggestions for other drivers to look at. I have already tried all the new Dayton RS subs, and several other TC subs. I am trying to find a woofer in the $150 or less range.
Thanks,
Jason

Since you are going withthe 500-watter, get one of the 12: Dayton RS subs and build small sealed box for it. Then use the PEQ on the amp to bump up the low end. Small box, excellent SQ, much output.

That box for the titanic would be problematic because of the size of the box & tuning. Simply put, the port would not fit inside the box. Thus, you would have to put the port *outside* the box. The easiest way to accomplish this is with a slot port.
For simplicity sake, I'd go with the TC. With the 500W, it's definitely the more expensive. Just remind your buddy of the Iron la. He can have it:
1. Loud
2. Low
3. Small
Pick two. ;-)

I considered that one, I really like those new RS subs, but the output below the mid thirties would be less than the TC sounds sub and quite a bit less than the ported Titanic

Yeah, the port length is a problem there, I figured on a slot port, the low end output is very impressive for the enclosure size though.
I have gotten a real good understanding of Hoffmans Iron Law in the past week or so, the more boxes I model, the more I see it.
