Multi driver staggered xover points

Has anyone experimented with multi driver enclosures where there were two larger drivers and two smaller (just for arguments sake two 12" and 8" woofer pairs)

One set of 12/8 woofers would be crossed at say 800 hz, and the other set crossed at 250hz.
Would doing this smooth the transistion points overall?

If you would do this, would it demand that all of the drivers were separated in the enclosure?

You could put all the drivers in one enclosure if its sized correctly. As for it being smoother...maybe maybe not depends on the design of your crossover and the drivers used.
