Well my old Sherwood bit the dust finally and I need a few recommendations for a replacement. A 5.1 is fine, probably a Yammy or Onkyo. What is available for a few hundred bucks and from where? thanks for your replies

You can pick up the Onkyo TX-SR303 for $99 (and many others for a great price) by buying refurbished from Onkyo. I picked up one a year ago for a bedroom system and it has been great. You have to join Onkyo's "club" to get the discount prices, but in doing so, they give you an extra $10 off, and they even shipped mine for free. Check out the link.

IMHO the best *cheap* ht receiver is the Panasonic XR-55/57, assuming you will be using digital sources. Lots of people will turn up their noses at the panasonic name, but the entry level yammy/pioneer/onkyo etc will not come close to meeting their rated power, and frankly sound wimpy IMHO, particularly the low end pioneer models. That is fine if you plan on using the preamp outs to feed an external amp (as I do with my Pioneer 811s), but that adds cost. You should be able to find the XR-55/57 for ~ $225 USD if you shop around. Another good choice is the JVC 203/303 series if you can find them in that price range. Once you get around the $350 USD mark you start seeing more good options like the Pioneer 1016.

Something you might want to have on whatever rcvr you buy is HDMI input/output. My Outlaw processor doesn't have any, and if I want to control my video with the processor, I can only do component video. My sat receiver has HDMI output. If I wanted to use it I would have to run it straight to my projector which is a PITA becasue I'd have to disconnect it to watch DVD.
Some of the newer technologies for TVs/projectors will have resolution capabilities (1080p) that you won't be able to take advantage of with component video. Maybe Bill can explain better, but I think HDMI is definitely something to get.
Then again, if you'll be upgrading receivers in a few years, you probably can get by for now.

That will be hard to find within his price recommendation of a few hundred bucks.

Any chance you would be interested in a gently used Yamaha HTR-5660? It's a 6.1 Dolby Digital receiver with 85 watts/channel and it's rated for use down to 4 ohms. My real world experience using it to drive a vintage pair of ADS L710's bears out the 4 ohm rating.
I have the original box and remote. The manual is a printout from a PDF file. (I don't know what happened to the original.)
You can get the specs and full description on it directly from Yamaha here: http://snipurl.com/svwz

>whether to get something for a year or two or pay the premium to get something that will be top quality for years. For music I am seriously upgrading, but for vidio I am just looking to get by for a year or two-- unless for $350 I can step up to good sound that will process the latest video and still provide decent audio. I am sort of waiting to get a HDTV before really jumping into quality video.
