I would like to build my own DIY subwoofer and take advantage of the current sale on the 15" RS series drivers and Dayton amps. I will use the sub for both home theater and music in a room that is 30'X15' Would you recommend:

1). High fidelity or high output? (15" RS Series)
2). 240W, 500W, or 1000W amplifer (I am hoping 500 will be adquate given my budget). I assume you'd recommend Dayton over Bash given its your amp, not to mention the 20% off sale?
3). What size cabinet? I plan to build it myself so assume sealed is the easiet diy project. I might consider a Dayton cabinet given that they are on sale and I live 20 min from Springboro so I don't have to pay shipping.

btw, I was out of town during the tent sale so I missed the specials. I stopped in a day early on my way out of town hoping to make a deal but was told it was one day only deal. :( Fortunately for me, the current sales aren't that far off from tent sale pricing.

Thanks for your help!

The HF look like they want a larger cabinet, but look nice for sealed... If your ol' lady won't kill you, I'd go for two of 'em, with a Behringer EP1500 or 2500 amp... This may be the new "get the po-po called" bang for the buck combination...

I agree, two subs with proper placement is a must in my opinion and HAA. Two will smooth the bass tremendously at your listening position. Proper placement of one sub ends up somewhere around 1/3 into the room and not as smooth. Corner placement excites all room modes and creates very uneven bass. I got the Dayton 1000W amps mainly because it has a parametric EQ which can do wonders for a sub design. If you are using WinISD add the EQ and play around with the response by changing all 3 parameters (freq, gain, Q).

I like the 15HO in about 3 cf vented with the BASH 500 w amp.

I'd go 17.75" square top and bottom, and 23" tall to be able to fit in TWO 3"d x 19" port tubes. The ports can vent out the bottom (or the top). Mid 20s, no problem.

I just build a sub using the HF version of the 15" and the 300W Bash amp.

Your first choice is the box configuration, sealed or ported are the easiest to implement.

http://www.diysubwoofers.org/ has good info on the plusses and minuses of different box types.

WinISD will help you determine box size and port size/configuration.

I went with a sealed configuration, 5.2 cu ft. It's a monster, weighs over 100 pounds and goes plenty deep and loud for music. I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Is the 300W enough power? Have you done HT with it? Test out "U-571" and let us know!

300W is plenty to keep up with my 50W Gainclone amp driving the mains. I built it solely for music, not HT. That's why I went sealed, tighter bass for music, but it doesn't go as low as a ported box.

I'd post a pic, but it's not very interesting. A big ugly, unfinished MDF box. I plan to hide it behind the couch.

I built mine 4 cu-ft sealed with the HO. The box also has a port, so I can switch back and forth. Overall I like the sealed slightly better. For a really loud movie, the port adds a little protection from over excursion. So far I have used it with a 150 watt amp with good results.
