I got 'Iced Earth - The Glorius Burden' today and playing it right now.
Recommended by AJ I think.
The Gettysburg CD which is disc 2.
Very 'Dio' Rainbow with cannons!!!!
The vocals from former Judas Priest singer Tim "Ripper" Owens sounds very close to Dio.
Anyways this CD is very well recorded and mastered.

Ever think what it takes to reproduce a CD like this through speakers???
Right now I can only play it on my computer with Logitech speakers, but I can piece it together mentally to figure out what it would sound like on DIY speakers.
I'm in the same boat AJ's in.
No HiFi speakers.
I said to myself "If I don't get any of 2 speakers Pete Schumacher dreamt up I won't listen to anything!
Hi-Fi anyways. :)
Here's my first impression;
Peavy 18" Low Riders for the guitar growl feel and cannon fire.
Dayton DA175's in a line array for the drum whacks and bass guitar.
They'll have to blend some how???
RS52's for the vocals and orchestra with 3/4" Neo's or Planar's in a line arraty also.....
Hmmm, maybe a mixture of DA175's and high effiecency mids.....
Anyways, thinking Colossi with different drivers.
Thank's AJ for the tip...

I have the Iced Earth Gettysburg DVD.
The documentary part is good, but music is
boring and frozen :) ... it's typical
'power metal', doesn't resemeble anything DIO
which is superior. :)

If you want DIO, get the new Holy Diver Live
just released. This is the real shiznit.

If you like metal music and want to build
a high power audio system, then don't be
'Caught in the Middle' and 'Don’t Talk to Strangers', look for the 'Sign of the Southern Cross' and contact the 'Gypsy' in 'Heaven & Hell', then spend 'One Night in the City'
and walk through the 'Gates of Babylon', then
you'll find the 'Man on the Silver Mountain'
near the 'Rainbow in the Dark'. Ask for the
'Invisible' 'Tarot Woman' and 'Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll'... We Rock.

Plan B. Just sent me an email.

'Rainbow In The Dark' even hearing that on a tinny speaker in my truck gives me goosebumps. I'm not really hearing that tinny sound but my mind switches gears and hears the 'live concert'...
I can't believe I can still drive straight and not hit anything. I mean - like I'm in a trance...

OK I got some line arrays.
They're my reference speakers. After building my high effiency PA speakers them Eminence drivers reproduced that live feel of electric guitars to a tee.
In fact unreal, well, Real....
What they slightly lacked at was the kick and slam of the DA175's or a line of DA135's...
Drums!!!! and bass guitar!!!!

Pete Schumachers 'Quads' really came close, I mean really close. They're point source - like people building line arrays with just one tweeter in the middle.

I have that 'gut' feeling that the RS52's with the DA175's and the Neo tweets could become an ultimate 'rocker/head banger' line array.

BUT to get them electric guitars to sound live?

Marry some high effiecency mids;
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=294-650&CFID=1198770&CFTOKEN=48034275
With a high effiency woofer!
Automatic power tapering....
Or, maybe a switch that'll back off the Seleniums so Jazz and PoP will sound indoors.

Oh Yeah, Plan B... Feed it 4 KiloWatts....

This 'Iced Earth Cd' is really recorded well.
I heard the orchestra and the rock band really meld well.

That's what got me to mentally picture a line array that'll recreate this sound.

Well, the message - it's political... I won't touch that on an open forum...

How did you like those quads? i may build them in the future (like far). Which tweeter did you like for metal?

I'm a couple weeks from A/B'ing them.
The quads with the North tweeter and the quads with the RS52 and Neo Tweet.
Also, I should have my test gear ala hongrn.
I got the electronics just need the 'know' where said equiptment and speakers will be for the cabling I'll need.

I went with the North tweeter for Pop & Jazz.
The K1 would be an excellent rocker and cheap.
I'm thinking of building a pair and adding a Neo 3/4" back mounted tweet for spatiallity.

I really liked the Selenium Super Tweeter I added in back of my PA speakers. Made them cymbals sound 3D...
Eventually I'm going to take Warrens advice and add better compression tweets to the front...

Dang, I really liked them PA speakers for 'Rock'..
I mean they got your head banging even at low volume.
The urethane wasn't even completely dry when I drove them over to my son's house.
They were still tacky....

So, this new line array keeps gelling in the brain.

Onward - "Just when I think I'm going to get out of this , they keep pulling me back in."

Hmmm...

I missed the x-over for the quad da's/rs52/neo. Would you mind posting it if you still have it?

I figured you'd say the K1, sounds like i may have to pick up a couple of those.

OK, here's Pete's crossover for the 3-way.
If everything goes right tomorrow, I could be glueing up the box by Saturday...

>>ultimate 'rocker/head banger' line array.

I've been planning the ultimate death metal
sound system for years. Maybe two more years
until it's done. I finally got all the drivers
and collected 12 pro amps. Bottom line, you need
phat cash if you want audiophile sound with concert SPL. The PA loudspeaker is the low cost
alternative but you never reach high quality
sound. It's best to avoid such desires unless
one wishes to be broke, lol ..... the pain of
not having money just to satisfy evil audio demons
... lol ... get Holy water before it's too late..
