Is there any solution out there that uses RCAs, quarter inch, or (fat chance...) XLRs?
That failing, what's the nicest sound card out there?

My M-Audio Delta 410 has RCA's and I've seen a few others that do as well. They usually have either break-out cables or a separate box with the connectors, they aren't typically on the card.

My CardDeluxe from Digital Audio Labs is a 2-channel card that has 1/4" analog input and output, and RCA digital input and output. <A HREF="http://www.digitalaudio.com/">http://www.digitalaudio.com/</A>
Also, the folks at <A HREF="http://www.tracertek.com">http://www.tracertek.com</A> have several different options, including one with XLR: <A HREF="http://www.tracertek.com/audiophile192.htm">http://www.tracertek.com/audiophile192.htm</A>

Do a google or ebay search for USB AUDIO INTERFACE and you will find lots of external "sound cards" that will do what you are looking for.

I use an M-audio Mobilepre USB and I think it's great. It's USB bus powered so no wall wart and I can move it to my desk or laptop. I use it for Soundeasy, TrueRTA, and as an interface to my PA. It has XLR mic inputs with phantom power and 1/4" line inputs and outputs.
Do you experience any of the USB latency issues with that MobilePre?
Thanks!

There are a whole slew of these breakout box audio interfaces out there, built for the mobile and modern singer/songwriter. M-Audio, PreSonus, EchoAudio, Roland, Edirol, Mark of the Unicorn (laugh if you want, its for real), Digidesign...these are all recognized names in the recording industry. They come in all flavors: USB, USB2, Firewire/1394, PCI box. Well built little things that are great for DIY speaker folk: most already have a mic preamp (phantom power) built into their inputs. And all these things are at least quasi-studio grade, I'd like think their sound quality is respectable.
Been looking at these for a while as an upgrade to the old Sound Blaster Live!....
Click the linky below for a review my brother did of the Presonus Firebox. Its a hawt little item!
My personal favorite for when I get the scratch (PCI interface, ie no chance for lag)

I believe you can get most lag issues worked out by tweaking some system settings.
Cool part is, they can almost function like a preamp for your computer. Great little boxes with real connectors. Might be a bit of a learning curve compared to normal sound cards, but since when has that scared the folk that frequent this board?!
Cheers,
