I was wondering if anyone has ever attempted to build a high spl speaker like the heresy. Seems like you could build similar speakers for less than half the price of the $800 a piece herecys. What drivers would be best to use and of course cheapest?

When I was in college I knew someone with some Heresys and I really liked them at the time. They rocked pretty good for no bigger than they were. I have often thought of whipping up something like them just for the heck of it. Inexpensive compression drivers and plastic horns aren't hard to find at a good price. If you want cheap here's a compression driver for you:

Here's a horn for it:

Or you if you want a cheap one-piece:

Here's a tweeter that should work well:

Here's an inexpensive woofer that would fit the bill:

<A HREF="http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=264-370">http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=264-370</A>

Although I would probably look for a woofer that would yeild better bass and still get up to the midrange OK. Those cost a little more.

One example on the cheap would be:

However, there are many woofer, midranges and tweeters that would work depending on how much you want to spend.

I built my tube buddy a pair of 8" MtMs (similar looking to the Dayton 8). They were 5 cf and used AUDAX carbon fiber woofers that reached into the 30's range, and a Vifa H26 horn dome. System SPL ended up in the mid 90's. I forget what Klipsches he has exactly, but they've got a horn tweeter, the "squawker", and I think a 12" woof with a 12 PR on the rear of a 3 cf box. I liked mine better (naturally) but he still preferred his (also, naturally). The AUDAXes did have a more robust bottom end, but he thought his mids had more detail, which is understandable. I just don't like all his horns.
