mic element replacement

Does anyone know anything about wirelss mic elements?
Can one just buy a better element and rewire the head?
I was thinking of adapting a Nady lapel mic to become a earset. I am trying to figure out why earsets are $200 and up for the mic alone. Could they be that complex?
And could one buy a better quality element from say Digikey and make their own earset or is there more too it in the transmitter pack that requires the element to be matched?
