Should I consider a different home theater receiver?
and Thanks to Aaron, which ever you are.

I'm a Yamaha fan myself ... but personally I'd rather have an 'older' generation receiver with a better amp section, like the HTR-5890 or RX-V2500. The newer Yamaha's do have some nice features though, all depends on what you're looking for.

If you ever want to add amp power (headroom are good...), you gotta have some place to plug it in...
Lately it occurs to me...

Every receiver these days has at least 6 channel pre-outs.

Not all of 'em... I'm using my Denon 2803 for a preamp only. It just didn't cut it run by itself.

There seems to be a lot of love for the Panasonic xr digitals at a couple of the other audio sites- as an alternative-gl.

Ok, 99.8% :)
Not surprising about the 2803 ... as long as you're running just 2 8 ohm speakers, it does ok. Using ~4 ohm speakers is a different story, and if you're running all 5 channels it's output is just pathetic.

...first and foremost... How easy is it to control stuff with? How well does the remote work to do stuff? There are some out there that have widdle biddy buttons for stuff like the volume control.
Personally, I want something that I don't have to turn a light on to see. I have some "glowing" remotes, but then I have to look at them. I wanna be able to feel the volume control, or whatever...
Check the web sites, etc., and see what looks user friendly to you.
Let's see...
Two Denon remotes (decent layout, hard to read in the dark)
Two Sony DVD/SACD remotes (two machines). No light, hard to read, buttons I use a lot are off in east jeezus.
InFocus 4805 Projector remote. Lights up.
Hitachi VCR remote
Sharp VCR remote
GE TV remote
Cable box remote
Sanyo TV remote
Rotel preamp remote (hate it)
Logitech Harmony (wish I could plug more into it...)
Phillips POS
Sony camera remote

And if you're running NO speakers, well, you can rock... Eventually I'm gonna score a different pre tho...

I should have added...this is for a bedroom...I'll have PLENTY of power.
I like the bass management and calibration features, among others.

I have a Pioneer 1016 and a 1015. They sound good, have gobs of power and are very easy to set up with their MACC system (auto calibration). I am running Acoustat electrostatics (less than 4ohms) with no problems.
I'd either opt for the Yamaha or the 1016 from Pioneer. I just sold my XR55 Panny. It was a very clean sounding receiver - well, almost too clean. I think my ears like the Pioneer or Yamaha sound a bit better, though.

I like Marantz quite a bit, more relaxed sound, great internal DACs, but not necessarily as many features.
