Hi.
Would someone please be willing to recommend a very small, cheap two way design. I need a pair of speakers to be used in a small box room (it measures 2.7 by 2.3meters). The parts for the design need to cost no more than $150. I prefer sealed, or open baffle designs, but appreciate a vented design may be a good idea to achieve some form of bass response.

Thanks. I'm looking at that kit now, looks ok. I meant to say he budget for the project is $150 for everything EXCLUDING cabinets.

Ben, I can recommend the BR-1 kit here at PE...comes with everything except the soldering pencil & solder. Did you plan on making your own cabinets? The Silver Al's at:

are a great budget design. Also check out Wayne's site:

The Dayton budget projects are well-designed and very popular. I've built quite a few of Wayne's projects and have been impressed at how good a speaker can sound w/o spending a bunch of $$. The Project Showcase here on the PE site has some great designs, also. I'm sure you'll find something you like...let us know if you need any more specifics.

Agree with John re the Dayton Budget, if you don't mind building boxes and have the stuff to do it. Otherwise, if you can solder, have a philips scredriver, pliers (though a crimping tool is better) and a drill (holes in the cabs are not predrilled), the BR-1s are hard to beat for the dough. You can literally be done 2 hours after they arrive.

Great sound, good output, great price.

Looks like a great value speaker, but its a bit big for my requirements- I envisage using just an MT type speaker.

Since nobody else has suggested it, my Microbe design fits your budget perfectly. It is very small but plays very deep and uses the RS125 and Tang Band T25-1166S. A ton of people have built them and everybody has sent great positive feedback.
The details are at the link below and there are several other variations available using different tweeters and some in a 2.5 way MTM format. Let me know if you have any questions.

You could try my "Audinum" design... Either MTM("Sir" edition, ~$100) or MT 2-way design. Both are vented designs.
Xover for the MT version:

I haven't posted the info on the MTM Xover yet, but if you're interested in either one let me know. You could also try this one:

It's about 60 bucks total. Not as nice high-end, but enough air. F3 of 65 Hz(modelled)! I have a 500uF cap in series with the driver, and that is it besides the drivers and a 4" sealed/stuffed cube.

Then just remove one woofer. Puts the price around $125 for a pair.
Even better. Replace the DA175 with the Ascendant audio 6.5" driver and use the same tweeter. I've got a crossover designed for it that should get you within a dB or so.

Roman,
Do you have a version using one RS125 4-ohm? I have been thinking about using your design and the extra sensitivity of the 4-ohm version would be welcome.
Thanks

I'm sorry but I don't have any versions using the 4 ohm RS125. You would be better off building one of my MTM designs though because you'll get higher power handling and higher sensitivity (close to 87dB). I have both a TB and Seas tweeter version. The TB version is shown below. I have a lot of extra info for the Seas 22TAF/G version and if you email me I can send it to you. Let me know if you have any questions.
By the way, even the original Microbe will play just as loud as a 4 ohm RS125 version but it will take a little more power to get it there.
