I purchased a Sony 5 Disc DVD/CD Home Theater System (surround sound) from Best Buy. I now find out that I need a "digital optical out/input" to hear my surround sound when I watch "normal" TV. Is this true and can I buy a part to connect it too so I can make it happen?? Please help! Thank you!

Is it a HT in a box? If not, you should be able to use the digital coaxial. "Regular" TV is not processed as 5.1 anyway, so you should have to set your receiver to phantom, or one of the Entertainment settings to make all the speaker simulate some sort of surround sound. HTH

Don't bother with digital optical cables. I bought one for my system and broke it first time spinning system around to get to wire connections.

I went to Sears for a digital coax cable. They are really good quality shielded cables, sold as 2 audio cables ($10) and 2 audio cables/ 1 video cable ($15). I liked them enough to buy 2 additional 3 cable packs.

Are you lacking a digital input on your sonny or are you talking about an actual digital cable?
As already stated "normal tv" which we will assume means 2 channel doesnt need Coax or optical. If your Tv audio is coming from a set box like you would get from a cable company and it can provide 5.1 via a coax or optical out put you will need to have a digital input on your sonny. Reading your post Im assuming you dont have that connection on your sonny. Is this right?
