Hi,
I'll be posting a few questions about the D 3 in the near future, and one right now as well.

I am using an old cabinet and replacing just the baffle in order to fit the speakers for the D3. The cabinet is only 1/2" thick so I will be adding some extra bracing. The dimensions of the cabinet are 10.25w x 37.5h x 11d. It leaves we with around 1.95 cubic ft. Which is way more than I need for the D3. I figure I will only need 23 inches for height, which leaves me about 14.5 inches left.
That with the rest of the dimentions leaves me with about .7 cubic ft to play with.
I will be sealing the top part of the cabinet off from the bottom part. But instead of just wasting space I thought I might add a subwoofer in the lower part. It would be a shame to see the .7 cu ft go to waste.

What are your opinions of this? I was thinking maybe I would go with the Dayton 8" shielded DVC Sub, but it's back ordered till Aug, so I could be more than open to other suggestions.

Thanks in advance,
Nathan

Nathan, I'm not an expert, but with that small volume, maybe one of the 10" RS series subs. I can't recall if the HF or HO would work, but I know that Shawn A. has used the 10" in a small sealed box and was pleasantly surprised with the performance. Here's a link to WinISD...it'll be able to model the driver so you can see what the results are. You could also plug in the numbers for the 8" SDVC and see how it comes out. If your budget is up to it, I'd go with the 10" RS...of course depending on how well it would work in .7 cu. ft.

That new hivi 10in. sub is desinged for a fairly small box.Or you might try one of tang bands subs.

I think that's a great idea.

I have listened to my D-3's for a good month now, and while the bass is good, the real low stuff I love just isn't there. Mabey Mr. Wolf could chime in. He has lots of experience with all things subwoofer, and might suggest a perfect fit for your available space.

Isn't there supposed to be a new Dayton 8" RS Subwoofer coming out very soon?!? That might be a good option for you. Paired up with one of the Bash or 240 watt Dayton amps for about $100/ea. would realy make a nice sounding system, and I think both of those amps are on sale!

Sounds like fun!

Let's try to keep the price down a little because I am after all building a budget speaker...at least for this one :-)

Thanks for the help so far.

It might not be that easy to get a lot more bass in that small of size. Here's what I came up with: Your D3's in a 1.17ft^ box, tuned to 36.75hz, and a Tang Band W61139SI in a .7ft^ box, tuned to 31HZ.

Heres a link to the driver: <A HREF="http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=264-832&CFID=10771876&CFTOKEN=23988125">http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=264-832&CFID=10771876&CFTOKEN=23988125</A>

To the pic from Win ISD that *should* be in this post anyway:

Just to see, I I put your D3's in 1.95ft^, tuned to 31hz. It pretty much overlays the Tang Band except for a roughly 1db dip between 45-100hz or so. I forgot to mention, the vent for just the TB is 2X just shy of 11 inches, and you should calculate (subtract) its volume from the sub-enclosure. All vents, regardless of diameter, come up as Qes/Pe! for me, so I'm stabbing at vent diameters. Hope this helps.
