View Full Version : Boo Hoo! is my receiver dying?
hello, i was wondnering if my stereo receiver is dying... my right channel is louder than my left and crackles like lightning, im surprised my speakers didnt blow, and it gets worse every time i turn the dial... it seems if i dont touch the dial right after i turn it on, its easier on the crackles.
i have a vintage pioneer SX-535 stereo receiver. it was made in the mid 70's...
if i cant have it repaired for a very low price, i'll miss its soft, warm blue glow, red stereo sign and bright orange tuning needle. its convenient to have digital tuners, but i've always admired non-digital(is it called analog? its always analog opposed to digital isnt it?) tuners for some reason... plus, it makes my Bose 161's sound awesome.

Sounds like it just needs some cleaning, but I've got a 780 I haven't checked out yet...
And an 880 in the garage that a neighbor had going until recently.
The Evil Teenager will be getting one of 'em...

Try to clean all of the components and connectors with de-oxidizing spray. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=341-225

You can also try Radio Slack - they have a product for cleaning contacts that you can pull the knob and squirt, then run your knob full travel a few times (power off) and for a RS purchase it seems to do a fairly good job.

You can't pull the knob and squirt on any 1970's receiver. You have to remove the faceplate and get in under the pots to squirt. It's not a huge process, but it's more than a pull-'n'-squirt. LOL.

Radio Shack sprays might be okay, but if I'm working on a nice piece of equipment I stick with Caig products.

Well, shucks! I am sorry to here your old receiver is dying, or just needs a cleaning, but you may want to consider springing for something else, like a newer or more powerful Pioneer or whatever to fill your needs. I can tell you from first-hand experience that if you can't do any repairs yourself, a technician will charge you his minimum, usually $75, to look at yours. I buy lots of stereo off of ebay, and have had great luck. I collect Marantz mainly, but I have sony, sansui and some of the big pioneer stuff. It is all good, when it works. Good luck.

I just copied the URL, by opening "properties" of the (enlarged) picture, then pasted it in the "Optional Image URL" location provided in the "Post Response" window.
