As you all know, I killed my amp a few months ago, and I have yet to get another one; but I think the time is coming! I have allowed myself a budget of around $550. Heres the thing though; I know that allot of you guys go against the idea of using a receiver, and so do I to a certain extent, but I have some hook ups in the industry that will give me a nice discount on %80 of the Yamaha receiver line up. That discount would allow me to likely get a $1000 receiver for around $550. The other option, the audiophile option, is to use a Pre-amp, and buy one high end mono block. In the time period of my use of a friends old Sony receiver, one of my Sony surround speakers died, and my Bose's sound has depleted. Even though I can get a great price on one of Yamaha's 7.1 channel receivers, I will likely only use 1.1 channels of it. If I were to build a mono block amp, all power would be used. What should I do? And if I went with the mono-block idea, what stereo(in case I want get to build another speaker) pre-amp can I get for around $200? What commercial, or mono block amp boards can I get for around $200?($150 for power supply, case, etc...)
BTW, I'm going on vacation tomorrow to Canada for a few weeks, so I won't be able to respond past tonight, thanks!

There are a lot of guys here who like the Yamaha equipment. If you don't have much of a system to work with, I would say get a middle of the road Yamaha with your discount that would leave you money left over to build some speakers.

The RX-V461 offers a lot of options and a fair amount of power. With a discount you may be able to get it for around $200 and it would leave you enough $ to build the tri trix. It would be a good start to a very good system.

My $.02.

If 5.1 will do, I may have just what you're looking for.

Unfortunately I have very little resources to build speakers right now, and If I ever obtain the resources, I plan on replicating my current speaker a couple of times to get a 5.1.
