I was looking for a system-wide equalizer for OS X and I came across this awesome little application called OSS 3D. It has an awesome n-band contour equalizer that you can just drag and pull at with your mouse, as well as a whole bunch of other tools like a bass resonance reducer, 3D effect (that actually improves imaging a LOT for near-field listening), phase inverter, L/R channel flipper, fidelity increaser (which from what I can tell cleans up HF sounds from MP3s). But the coolest feature is probably the system wide mixer, that lets you control the volume and "affectedness" of every open application in OSX.
I didn't have too much hope that this application would actually do anything useful, but after listening to it for a while it improves the dynamics of MP3's about 300%. I actually can't stand them without this program now that I've used it for a few days, definitely recommended.
