I just finished watching the Transformers movie. I read a post today about the sound track being not so good. I live for movies like this; I guess it’s just the kid in me:)
Anyway, I thought the sound was great!! At least on my system it was. This kind of sound track is why I started building speakers. When War of the Worlds came out I rushed out to rent it, I was so anxious to see it on my big screen at home. I was very disappointed. Not in the movie, but the sound, it was horrible. That was the first time I heard a sub bottom out and quack like a goose. Also the dialog was completely garbled by the sound effects. No money for high end stuff, so I became a DIYer.
I gotta thank everybody for all the help in getting me to this point. My current system ROCKED the livin S#@T outa this movie. I realize the sound of smashing glass, screeching steal is not pretty to listen to. It made me nervous and a little uneasy, just as the director intended I would think. The LFE put a butterfly in my stomach and shook the house. I was riveted to the screen by the sound effects and sub-sonic attacks to my brain.
I will re-rent War of the Worlds soon to have a new listen.
THANKS again, all of you, for teaching me and putting your designs out there for all to use.
My sub is at the link below. I call it the "speakeasy" and cary a big stick. and the pic is the Scalenes, X3 for the R/L/C.

Thanks all....
Gary S.

...as it's a rewarding one at that! I see the theme in your 3-piece for the moment of the Copper/pickle-stain wood. Nice aesthetics, and not a usual, but awesome outcome!
Keep it up!
Later,
Wolf

The War of the Worlds sub 30 Hz is good, but the ultimate test is some of the cannon battles in Master and Commander. What happens is that they have cannons firing across all 5 (6 or 7) at high volume and very low frequency at once. Most surround receivers can put out near full power at low frequency on a couple channels at once, but aren't realistically designed to operate that way with all chnnels at the same time. My 660 watt Pioneer VSX 515K receiver shut down entirely at one point. Hasn't happened before or since or on any other movie.

Master and Commander creeps up on you..with dts you think you are just listening to dialog at just a nice comfortable volume, and suddenly the cannons start to fire at much louder volume with sharp "attacks". This movie could easily rip drivers to sheds too if you aren't careful.

I agree with David about Masters and Comander. The sound track is great for audio demoing. Those canons are deep, especialy the seen in the fog and you hear the canon in the distance. Tom Daugherty

Let me put it this way... I bumped the sound to the LFE sub by 12db at one point, and walked up and felt the drivers to see if they were doing anything... They were. Sort of.
