Many of you may recall, I have been discussing TL's and building a pair of tall, narrow column tower type. I saw a Rosinante cabinet sold by Zalytron I wanted to duplicate with Dynaglass (fiberglass body filler) over a MDF built enclosure and then spraying with a quality automotive finish. (See link below) I am seriously considering enlarging this project and building similiar enclosures around a larger woofer, for even more, deeper bass. Wolf pointed out an 8"X12" Tang Band woofer that might work for me, and looks good. (like a KEF)

Many of you also may recall I am considering building a couple powered subs around an RSS390HF 15" Dayton woofer. I have been doing some brainstorming. Now, me, being a guy who likes to do things easy, previously I would probably just have figured cubic volume in a sealed enclosure to obtain a Q of between 0.6 and 0.7, based on the woofer's specs, or let Vance Dickason do the math by buying the kit. But I've been looking around at other stuff, hoping to find something that promises even more QUALITY bass. One of you recommended decware.com and I was looking at 2 folded horn subs called the "Wicked One." They were available in both dual 10" and dual 12" versions. Then I began to observe some other designs, which they had quite a selection, like the, "housewrecker," (or something along that line.)- Interesting website. I thought instantly of building something unusual like a folded horn, Voigt pipe or stuffed tapered transmission line. I have been seriously considering incorporating this 15" Dayton driver, which is highly recommended by so many of you in this forum, into a very large TL design. Does any one know of any proven TL designs around this driver ? (I am kind of a intermediate/beginner, and don't have alot of confidence in design, as much as I do in duplicating and fabricating an already proven design.)

I asked in a previous post, but maybe no one saw, I was wondering: Could I expect a transmission line type design to outperform a sealed or bass reflex system in bass purity and depth. I am the type who values bass quality, accuracy and a tight, controlled bass, as opposed to boomy and exaggerated bass. Most of the literature I have read, written by TL advocates suggest that they do and claim it's the only design that allows a woofer to produce bass down to it's free-air frequency. Of course, I realize much of this can be subjective and a matter of opinion and there are surely arguments on both sides with TL advocates, bass reflex, acoustic suspension, bandpass, isobarik, etc. Just wondering some of your opinions out there, and value your experience, opinions and expertise on the subject. I have been made aware of the recent technological advances regarding TL's, and wondering where to find any proven, existing designs I am not aware of.

I love to design and build TL-based speaker systems, and I'm convinced "TL bass" has some special qualities. That said, I would never use a TL design for a subwoofer or, likely, not even in a 3-way with the woofer playing below 300 Hz. TLs are not bass panaceas and neither is any other kind of box. A TL will not necessarily "produce bass down to its free-air frequency", if you actually think it will automatically have a flat response down to the driver's Fs. In the end, you'll most likely end up with a really big TL box with performance that could have been obtained in a smaller, sealed box (depending on the driver, of course).
