Has anybody used any of these things yet? How do they measure? Would you even be able to use conventional methods to measure them?
Anyway, I was just curious about them and hoping someone had more information than what's available on their web site.

Sweet, I've been wondering when they'd become available. Actually that was a lot faster than I expected.
I'm eager to see some outside measurements on them myself.
There are graphs on the tymphany website available now! says the 250's are rated for 100W, FS of 60hz is a bit high for my liking...
The LAT 700 is pretty impressive... 500W as a 100hour rms test, long term max power of 1kw. Still has a bit of a steep rolloff though it has an FS of 24hz.
I dont buy that it's as powerful as two 12's. Maybe power handling wise, but for really clean music duty, I still think a real sub is key. The rollof on these looks pretty steep, and somewhat unchangable due to their unique design.
That said, these could be awesome in the right set of speakers. I'm eager to see what people do with them. The price tag on the smallest LAT has me thinking they may not price the big ones out of existence.
Thanks for the heads up! I'm eager to see more in the months to come.

My budget is blown for the next month as Christmas is approaching, so I can't order one to check it out. If you or anyone else does test one, please post your results. These things seem to have promise, though I wonder about harmonic distortion.

My budget is blown too. Plus I just got a pair of subs...
The size requirements still have me intrigued. The vas of 3.8 cu feet on the largest LAT is not obnoxiously huge.. With a small bookshelf designed into that same box, one could use a plate amp for active XO and perhaps mod the plate amp for some better response. Smaller towers with some bass extension. Let a solitary sub pick up the rest and you're golden even down to 20 (or lower) hz. Serious HT duty...
The only thing that has me wondering is at 3.8 cu feet it would be larger than the reference 15 HF's I just built with Daryl's filter mod, although admittedly the long cylindrical design of these drivers means a "sleeker" front, rather than something that needs to be at least 15 inches wide (which would be too narrow so say 16 to 17 inches minimum). The tall sleek look is definately in, these might be a unique way to meet that requirement.
Someday, I may look into one of these, though used in an application other than their intended purpose (I wouldn't use them as a subwoofer replacement).
The distortion has me worried too. It's a bit of a unique design. I'm concerned they may be one note wonders aimed at the flat TV or the ipod dock tymphany is hyping them for.

I usually use it to help me gauge low frequency production. I could be way off base though as drivers very frequently will extend far below their FS (and they don't fly apart at FS, unlike other things driven at resonant frequency).
The LAT's still didn't look very subby, the curves would show that. They roll off pretty steeply. Theyre usable as subs, but not for the ultra low end frequencies without some tweaking. With the right setup they could be beasts.

I'm pretty sure that they're intended for the autosound market.
-save space
-good output
Check and check, they don't need to do 30hz cleanly, just 50-60hz with some oomph.
They'll sell like hotcakes.

Dont forget the Ipod dock and flat panel TV they're hyping them for.
Didn't even think about auto use.
With enough finaglig they may be usable in a set of nicer speakers, but as I said, I think a real sub would still be required for the low end.

If you go to the "Tymphany" website, you will find, they offer, two other, larger models.

Mentioned earlier.
I'm still not buying that theyre as bassy. And the VAS isn't small on the larger driver, so there isn't much saved space.

I think you're right, a "real" sub would still be needed, but it's always nice to have options when trying to work in aesthetics with this hobby. My wife is getting more into these interior design shows and she's pretty good, but gone are the days that she was okay with monsters in the living room.

..as they'd make a great aesthetic piece oriented this way.

Make two subs and use them as stands for the floorstanding towers. No space wasted there, and everybody wins..
It's not THAT obnoxious. A horn or a smokestack sub would be obnoxious. Two sealed boxes are nothing.

Was thinking the same thing.
The smaller ones might even be workabe into a pair of bookshelves!
