I recently bought two car amplifiers rated at 240 watts each for 4 ohms. It also has a 5 amp fuse protection.
Will a PSU rated at 120v -> 13.5v, 10 amp work for these car amplifiers (home used with a pair of 8 ohms speaker)? The PSU have a internal 4 amp fuse protection also.

240/12 = 20A maximum. Your measely 5A will give you 60W at 14VDC. I think you got hosed.

Well... most amps put the "maximum peak" on the cover (especially cheap car amps) and it might have enough capacitance to hit 240W for a very... very... short time but is more like 60 watts continuous. That 60 watts is also assuming a 100% efficiency which is totally improbable, I'd say more like 30-40 continuous.

But, to answer the guys question a semi-cheap computer PSU would be able to handle a 5 AMP load. or maybe one of the pyramid 12V PSUs that PE sells.

That PSU will work. Car amps run on 14.4V when your alternator is on. Also amperage is one of those things that is only there when it is called upon, so if a amp is only drawing up to 5 amps, you are just being easy on your PSU that can potentially give 10 amps.

head units have 10 amp fuses

if it doesn't have at least a 20 amp fuse its not an amp - it's a joke.

i told you not to buy that c4ap. you didn't get no special deal there. $20 is exactly what that amp is worth.
