View Full Version : I liked the old forum format better.

Oh, well. I guess, perhaps I'm just old fashioned, but I find this format much more difficult to use. (I'm not a really good "computer guy") Hard to teach an old dog like me new tricks. Usually, I like to just "lurk" and read posts.
I've been away from things here for a little while, being occupied with business around and about here, working on my house, etc, and was surprised to see the changes.
I hope we'll all still be able to network the same way as under the older format and with the same friends. Hope this new format doesn't discourage many of the users from before. :) Interested in things I may have missed during the past few weeks, too.
Best Regards,
Eric

Hi Eric,
You might find you like it better after a while.
I joined Audio Circle when the Mad Board went down and got to like the format.
With this format when someone gives you grief you can click on their name open their profile and read all of their previous posts which helps you size them up.
You can click anyones name and see exactly what they are doing what they are viewing or if they are currently responding to a thread and which one.
If you leave the computer to go take crap we will all know exactly what your up to (not really).
That is unless they choose to be hidden, in that case you can't see their status.
This new forum has an edit function where you can go back in at any time and correct errors or clarify things.
There is a photo gallery so you can post images without need for you to have your own webhosting and you can put as many images in a post as you like and insert them into the text right where they belong.
For recurring subjects this new board has blog space where you can put down your rhetoric and then link to it everytime the subject comes up.
You can also easily find your (or someone elses) previous posts with the 'find all posts by' function and link to them.
Searches look through the entire history of the forum without the need to go into a separate archives section like before.
Not shure if you knew but you did not need to start a new account as the administrators already created an account for you.
Your username is nepaeric and all of your old posts are in it already.

Hey, Daryl.
I appreciate your insight and helpful info/advice. I am trying to figure out how to access my current user ID, or merge the two, as I've created a new one. :o
One nice feature of this idea is the registration, discouraging "anonymous" users claiming to, "have taste," from harassing regulars here, as has been done in the past. :p
Otherwise, I am still a bit confused. Hopefully, over time, I will begin to understand more of how things work. :o :)
Warm Regards,
Eric

Once you're accustomed to the new format and the added benefits I'm confident you'll really like it. What's more is most forums are similar in format and function so you can hop seemlessly from one to the next. It's groovy, man :)

Just wondering, because my friend, Jim (Junkyard Dog) is also interested in subject matter pertaining to hi-fi/speakerbuilding, as well, and he uses my computer. (He's the guy many of you might recall pioneered the idea of rebuilding a couple pairs of speakers he found in the trash.)
Could he post using a different name so others know he is not me, or would I have to post it for him?
Just curious. Thanks.

Sorry, I meant, "Dumpster Dog," many remember him as. :o Jim D is his real name, and I'm sure he'd like to participate, as well.

Eric, it has taken me little to get this format and that just a little.
I did like the old one but we have not choice. This is what I have done to make it as close as possible.
Under User CP, which is at the top of the page in the red bar to the left, go to Setting and Options select edit options which I think is the third field down. Change the thread display mode to "linear-oldist 1st". Then at the bottom of that field check the threaded forum view. In between those I go back a week and twenty per page. Then save changes at the very bottom.
Now my shortcut is to the tech forum and after i bring it up I scroll down to the bottom of the first page and change the display to newest thread 1st and hit display threads and its pretty close to what it was.
Hope that helps and keeps you around.

Jim can create his own account with his own user name and password.
If you have already selected 'remember me' when you have logged in previously then you will be automaticly logged in under your user name and password each time your computer returns to this site.
What Jim would do is click on 'Log Out' near the top right of the screen and then log back in under his own user name and password.
The next time you visit the board you will then have to log in with your own user name and password.

Yes, it does help. Thanks for the advice. I will try that. Anxious to see how this works. Once accustomed to it, I might find it more useful. Appreciate your input for an old dog like me, who resists change. :o

Eric

The other format would trap me into spending way to much time wasting time reading posts and looking at pictures. Since the change I've been doing more things than just surfing the net and might just even get around to finish building the speakers I've been working on for maybe 2+ years now maybe.
I also started to work on planting a garden again so I can save a little money on food costs as well this summer. I might even lose a little weight doing all that physical farm work.

Yes, I have been doing the same, myself. (Planting a garden.) Nice to see you here again, under the new format.

Hi Eric, I'm one of those old dogs, too. The first time it took me a while to get everything the way I wanted it, but it's pretty much like the old, just spruced up a bit. With the climate on the net these days, a change was inevitable, even if just to keep one of our favorite places from becoming a memory. I got it so I can view threads like before, in linear fashion. I really like being able to post pics directly from my computer, have a little bio section and a blog to type out all my opinionated views. Patf has been extremely helpful with suggestions and any ?'s about the new format. "Above and beyond" is how I describe it. Pat can answer any ?'s about Jim logging on and using his user name and password.

I share Paul K's views and frustration regarding the format, but dealing with the inevitable change. I do see some advantages, but also much confusion.
I fear many "old dogs" may vanish, such as Paul, who's informative knowledge is invaluable, and loss would be tragic.
I'm still hanging in, despite the somewhat intimidating format, and hopefully will learn it, as many of us "old dogs" have a tendency to resist.
Best Regards,
Eric

I personally couldn't stand the old setup...
New threads were placed at the top of the page, while new posts to old threads remained with the old threads (which did not move up). The new format makes a lot more sense -- all of the new posts, whether new threads or responses to old threads, are sent to the top of the page.
Besides that, you can do bold, italics, or underlined -- you can do different colors, you can do :D smilies :p, and you can post multiple links (http://www.foldedspace.org/jeff/audio/HFspider.jpg) or photos...

It's the way most forums have operated for years, PE is just finally catching up...

Guys,
This really is easy to resolve for those of you that loved the old threaded format. Simply click on User CP at the top left of the page. Then select edit options from the left hand column. Under the threaded display options section, select "Linear- oldest first" from the drop down in threaded display mode. Then scroll down to the bottom of this section and place a check mark in the box next to "Threaded Forum View". Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "save changes".
You can now go into the forum and it will look like the old one. If you want to explore a bit, in the same section, you'll find options for email notification, private messages etc.

There's a whole separate subforum for this kind of discussion. It's the "Forum Feedback" subforum, and is checked frequently by the programmers and others responsible for the forum's format.
I think the "Awesome job on the new forum, guys!" and "Graawr, the new forum format sucks and I'm leaving and never coming back!" threads in the main Tech Talk discussion subforum are getting tiresome and repetitive.
Forum Feedback (http://techtalk.parts-express.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4)
One nice feature of this idea is the registration, discouraging "anonymous" users claiming to, "have taste," from harassing regulars here, as has been done in the past. :p
LOL!:D:D
FWIW- you can see the forum similarly as before. Select "Hybrid view" and check the last box in your options for "threaded-forum-view". Once you hit these, it'll look more familiar to you!

Eric, you can both post from the same machine, he would just need to log you out and log in to his own account to make posts as himself. After he creates an account, e-mail me and can get his posts from "Dumpster Dog" attached to his new user :D
