..to mate with these MDT40's I've had for awhile. I'm just looking right now, and think the cost ought to be *around* $50-$80 list (no $ more, please!), and be a 6"-7" driver. I just want something on-par for the tweeter.

Probably a higher-dB recommendation would be better, so I can come close to matching the inherent 89dB sensitivity of the tweeter. Poly-cone, or a more-damped alternative are also preferred. I think a squarer-frame would look better, but is not required.

So far:
AC AC-165 (I knew I should have kept those at a Tent Sale a couple years back! I put them back on the shelf.)
HiVI F6
Dynavox 6.5"

(Push comes to shove, I might revamp the "Francium" project to remove the Audax HM170Z18's and use them. The "Francium" would then only be the Focal/BG 2-way, instead of a 3-way....)

Wolf

Peerless Exclusive? Wait, you wanted damped. Hrm...

Then maybe the Nomex cones. They do have top-end breakup, but it seems to be fairly begnign. An Re of 7.1 and a solid 88dB sensitivity looks good, too.

That's a good thought! I have not used a Peerless yet, however, those TB underhung 6"s might also be viable.

how about some 5 inch focals? i have a 3 of 5 k013ARL's nib oem you need to glue on dustcaps. these should spec to 5k011's but they are made without dustcaps. you can add a phaseplug or glue a dust cap. they play really well with your tweeter. I have 3. phil

the 5k011 specs are

qts .3

vas 11.9 liters

fs 54.7

sens 88db

good price if you want them

I've got a set of the older 5.5" CSX cones. I've been thinking about pairing them up with the MDT-37s (the beefy horn-loaded job) that are sitting on the same shelf. Would be a pretty efficient setup, if I used all 4 in an MTM.

My friend has the 6.5 Dynavox drivers and I have to say I am very impressed. Real nice sound.

The rising response in low triple digits is begging for a wide baffle, something that shifts the midrange baffle step response correction to those lower freqs.

I'll second the Peerless Exclusive suggestion. BTW both the Exclusive and Nomex use the same nomex cone, so damping will be nearly the same. Super linear motor. Also they have good sensitivity compared to others, even others rated the same like Dayton Ref.

Any idea how they compare sonically to the old CSX cones? The reason I haven't done anything with mine is because they disappeared from the market shortly thereafter.

Thanks, JRT! It still could be doable....

I'll have to think about the Exclusives.

Philip- No thanks, I don't want Kevlar for this one. I did say "well-damped".

I'll keep you all posted.
