Hi everyone. Great time, great people, great speakers, great host and venue, great music,....... There were lots of questions about what music various designers played. There were a ton of good cuts. Thanks guys! Your two selections were the ones I was most interested in finding out. They showed off your work and your designs very well. The other track I was interested in finding out was what Curt C. used.
I was very disappointed with two of my three selections. The Brubeck track came across pretty good. But the other two were mastered at a level quite a bit lower than the reference tracks and they didn't work that great in the size of room we were in. I learned something, for sure.
Not that anyone probably cares, but they were:
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five - "Three to Get Ready"
Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever - "Free Fallin"
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense - "Once in a Lifetime"

I have made a test cd for my demos with snips for getting in more samples like the test disc. They are as follows:
Quincy Coleman- "Calling Your Name" from Come Closer. Independent, but purchasable. www.quincycoleman.com
Used for the trumpet solo, and her vocal.
LSU (Mike Knott)- "Grace" from Grace Shaker, Alarma label. OOP.
Used for "big-room" acoustics.
Norah Jones- "Little Room" from Not Too Late.
Used for "small-room" acoustics.
Corrs- "Toss the Feathers" from their debut album, Forgiven Not Forgotten
Fun, driving song with a wooden fife and guitar.
Rodrigo y Gabriela- "Stairway to Heaven" from their self-titled debut.
Used for "spacial imaging". He is supposed to be right of center between the speakers.
Sammy Hagar- "Little White Lie" from RED. I used this on Icthus.
ROCK ON!
I don't know how many people liked those, but I felt they were appropriate. It's too bad the L/R were reversed all day and none of us noticed.

I wasn't quite able to make it this year, but I'll be going to Limewire. ;-)
This is what I would have brought.
Alan Jackson - Like Red On A Rose - "Good Imitation Of The Blues"

http://www.amazon.com/Pictures-Katie-Melua/dp/B000TLPVYU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1225127939&sr=1-2
Joel Grare - Paris-Istanbul-Shanghai - Nihavent

Gotan Project - Lunático - "La Viguela"
http://www.amazon.com/Lun%C3%A1tico-Gotan-Project/dp/B000EHQ7KG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1225126098&sr=1-2
SOS - Balance 013 - "Brian Ferry/Don't Stop The Dance (Special 12" Remix)"
http://www.amazon.com/Balance-013-Various-Artists/dp/B0013XW9ZW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1225127585&sr=1-1
To be honest I think the tracks that most easily differentiate between my good-better-best speakers are the classical tracks in my collection, because nothing else is as demanding from the point of view of realism and dynamic range.

Thanh.

Wolf,
You're right on with the L-R thing. I noticed it on Sunday when I hooked up the "Shrubs" and ran the test CD. My pro amp doesn't label "L" and "R", but rather channel 1 and 2. When I first hooked my amp up, it took me a while to convince myself I had it right.

I actually didn't notice it until Todd played the Acoustic Alchemy track after the event was over. The ring is in the left channel, and it was produced in the right. I guess I didn't notice things spacially very well in there, or I should've noticed Rodrigo was to the left and not to the right like he should have been.

I noticed the L/R reversal while listening to the Mozart piece on Doug's tracks and mentioned it to him when the "hat" was being passed to take up a monetary collection for Doug.
My tracks were: First, Dean Peer playing Lord's Tundra, and I copied it from my Sterephile Test CD3. Second was The Brassworks playing St. James Infirmary, copied from my Stereophile Test CD2. My last track was the last two minutes of Ravel's Alborado del Gracioso from Reference Recordings "Pictures at an Exhibiton" (RR-79CD).

That is correct but at that point in time it would have been unfair to change it. Next year I will make sure that it is correct from the start and will have it verified by someone other than myself:rolleyes:

I have the fix to make sure the R/L channels don't get mixed. I will record the test tone (pink Noise) to only the right channel that way if it gets reversed we will know it right away (pun intended).

Good god! I didnt think anyone would have used any tracks I even remotely like (although thats the only song like it own). I stand corrected, thank you sir. (you should get the mtv unplugged version as well. It was from 2000 rather than 1996 like the original album)
I still think most of the music people use to show off their speakers is usually among the worst possible options aside from the fact that the recording quality is usually good. If I wanted to really test a system, I might test one song with light instrumentation dominated by vocals... I havent listened to any heavy metal in 7 or 8 years, but if a system sounds detailed, precise and warm while belting out a track from one of a few melodic (emphasis there) metal bands, chances are it will sound good with everything else as well.

My three selections:
‘Cryin Shame’ - Lyle Lovett and His Large Band.
‘Rio de Janeiro Blue’ - Randy Crawford and Joe Sample from ‘Feeling Good’.
‘Like this Train’ - Joni Mitchell from KCRW’s ‘Rare On Air, Volume 2’.
Good luck finding the last one!

Wolf, I mentioned to Scott Sehlin that the violins on the Mozart track seemed to be coming from the right, instead of the left, but neither of us got off our duffs to check it out.
I thought I wouldn't mention it after the fact, because it may be impossible to tell how it was actually wired after dismantling, but apparently someone discovered it?
Too bad, Doug. I have been known to miswire things, too (crossovers).
Great job anyway, overall.
Oh, you were just testing us ;-)

How can anyone "judge" speakers when everyone's playing different tracks?

Dennis,
There were 7 standard 1 minute tracks that all the speakers had to play and then the designer got 5 minutes for his own selections.

I'm a bit surprised to see what appear to be mostly "studio" recordings being used, and a dearth of material where any comparison could be made to "real".
It would seem more to the point to gather a barber shop quartet, a bluegrass band or some singers from the local opera company, record them (shouldn't be too hard to come up with a couple matched ECM8000 and a couple channels of AtoD in a speaker building crowd) and then bring them to the event to sing or play live every now and then to keep fresh in mind what it *should* sound like (while listening to the speakers).
Makes more sense (to me) than comparing speaker to speaker without any reference standard . . .

My tracks:
1. Your Latest Trick - Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms 20th Anniversary Edition
2. Ashokan Farewell - Songs Of The Civil War
http://www.amazon.com/Songs-Civil-War-Various-Artists/dp/B00000283E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1225206342&sr=1-1
3. The Pot - Tool - 10,000 Days
The two tracks of the day that nailed me to the seat were Maynard's choice of the Tonic Solfa cut and the Dean Peer bass solo that Paul K. shared with us. Any time I hear a great bassist laying down such great work I'm riveted.

Thank Wayne Wendel for the Tonic Solfa. He got me started on 'em.
Excellent idea for a thread, Dan.
For my speakers (the faceted ones) I played…
A 1 minute clip from Sarah Vaughan of “Key Largo”
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000TENL62/ref=dm_sp_alb?ie=UTF8&qid=1225225858&sr=8-3
And a full song from Grant Lee Buffalo called “You Just Have to be Crazy”

Oh so it's Wayne I should be sending the bill to huh :D? I picked that disc up on Amazon for a song (pun really intended, as bad as it is) so it's going to be some of the best dollars I've spent recently. Can't wait to give it a listen in my house over and over again. Of course, it would be great to hear them on your speakers again, Maynard. They're really getting me to thinking I should build a pair just because they sound so damn great.
