I've got a 12'x36' room i want to turn into a home theater with a projector and screen at one end. My current plan is to build a full 5.1 with tritrix tl mains and tritrix center and the matching MT design for the rears. I wanted to go with a RSS390HF-4 for the sub but taking another look in the room, I'm concerned it may cause hemorrhaging in weaker people and may take up too much room. This being HT orientated, I want the lowest f3 i can get for the $$$. Am i going for overkill here? Should i do 2 smaller stereo subs? I could use some guidance from the gurus (and non-gurus alike) on here.

Non-guru:
Go with a pair of RSS390HF-4 15" Subs, each in a 10 cubic foot box with box tuning at 16hz. :)
You could make the boxes stand tall, 16" by 18" by 60" so they take up less floor space. Though you may have to pack the bottom as you may or may not have a standing wave issue with the height on this. Others could comment.

There are better ways to hit 16hz, not that you really need to, anyway.
OP: is this new construction? If I was to start a new HT-room, I'd go for an IB...
As per multiple subs: there are articles and white papers which suggest this to be the best methodology for home theater.... I don't really use subs much anymore, so I'll let other comment on it. Just know, you have a LOT of options, don't feel cornered by 1 or 2 designs.

Thanks. I'm thrown all the options i can think of in a bucket, I'm on here to see which ones i've missed.
It's basically a blank room. I moved into a 4 year old house and this room is completely empty right now.
As for IB, the room is in the basement (1/2 underground) and 3 outside walls. The only place i can do an IB sub is on the left wall (if you were facing the screen) which has the open space under the stairs. I'm not sure how much volume this would be for a IB sub. Also would it still be alright having the IB manifold on the left of the whole theater rather than in front or centered?

Few updates, the room is actually 12'x26'.
Also, i check with the guys over at Cult of the Infinite Baffle and turns out the area under my stairs will work well with some IB subs. So I plan on joining the "cult".

IB is the way to go. I have a rss390hf-4 in wall it is killer.
One thing's for certain, with a room of that length, you aren't going to have any appreciable room gain. That makes me suggest ported.
Really, what's the budget? We can throw ideas out all day long...

If you are going IB, you may want to look at the Acoustic Elegance IB15's.

i suggested the IB15 over at CoIB. Since i have to install it under the stairs, it's a pain to fit more than 2 drivers down there. Plus the high Vas of the IB15s minus the manifold dimensions made them not a good choice for the area under my stairs.
Thomas over there suggested 2x FI IB3 18". The required Vas was lower and would make up for only having 2 drivers.
Well my budget started at like $300. If i do the double IB3s, it's going to a little under $700. So between $300 and $700.
I'm aiming to get the whole HT setup under $3k.

don't cut back on the subs, You can always go with a smaller surround and upgrade them in a year or two.

I've priced the whole theater out with the IB subs w/amp and it's still under $3000. That's the way I'm heading so far as long as the manifold+subs fit under the stairs.
I've never heard an IB sub or an 18" sub for that matter, but from what i've read, i'm not going to be disappointed.
