Hey guys , I thought I would share a weird/kewl little speaker I found at a local store. They set me back $4.99 ea. in Canadian dollars. They look to be well built they have a large odd shaped magnet , vented rear spider ,bumped back plate , the voice coil leads even split to opposite sides , there is a positive terminal on one side and the negative on the other. I would consider them to be fullrange , but they have a fairly bright top end. Some of the T/S parameters surprized me! Fs= 136 , Qms= 15.1 (Yes thats a 15.1!), Qes= 1.0 , Qts= .94 , Re= 7.9 , Le= .17!
Now what to do with them?

I wonder if they are TV speakers.

I saw those at Princess Auto. The frames looked like to much work to mount. I picked up some other sony drivers there before that were decent.

Would the magnet be formed that way only due to physical constraints of the original design?

That is a high Qms spec for certain! Interesting drivers! I would also consider them FR drivers. Maybe a .1-.2 mH coil in series would tilt down the FR to be pleasing, and more flat/balanced. I would wager the magnet is for enclosure constraints as speculated, and large to "try" and maintain the Bl and electrical drive.

The frame tabs are that way for a reason. Normally the plastic-posts the screws attach to from behind the speakers' surface are raised/recessed to keep the screws from being on the surface of poking through. I would imagine the tabs can be straightened using a couple of strips of MDF and a set of clamps. The strips can be used to hold the tabs as you bend them, and then clamp for flat once where you want them.
