So I got bored yesterday and built a 2.2 cubic foot enclosure, tuned to ~28 hz and threw my Perfect 10's in there. Tossed them in my car and...
Way much bass now. I knew it would happen, but seeing that rising curve on paper and hearing it are two totally different experiences.
It really brings out the bass-head in me! Last evening I felt like I was 19 again, bumping around listening to old-school "gangsta rap" at bleeding ear levels. That's right, I dusted off Easy-E and slid it on in the Kenwood.
For kicks, I fired up the old RatShack meter and buried the needle. So much for that.
Now, I get why some people run vented enclosures and EQ the low stuff out. Smart idea, actually, because it gives you tons of overhead when you want to listen loud.

I have often enjoyed a lazy summer evening on the porch, wind in my hair, coke in my hand, the soothing sounds of trunk lids and exhaust pipes singing along with Mc Hammer...

I have to admit that bass is so primitive, yet fulfilling.

Crazy, bet it makes all the kids jealous eh?
Im not much of a bass head, but that must be impressive to hear regardless. Im probably gonna keep it simple in my Impala and have a nice clean kick drum bass.

The title seemed a natural... :D
It's quite a lot of bass, and I am hearing things in the music I never knew were there. Like the sound of my spleen splattered on my drivers side door. The soothing harmonics of my trunk lid trying to detach.
It's a little much even for my bass heavy taste but if nothing else it will get me to buy a damn EQ so I can bring that rising curve back down where it belongs. That should free up a TON of power and increase my overhead even more. I am liking this vented approach.

OK, That does it!! I'm going to have to put the unmentioned sub project I slapped together in the back seat of my car!!!
What is it? :D Well, some may remember a sub called the "Bitty Boom" a while back... this would be similar but, uh, a bit bigger. I should be able to still see out the rear view mirror, and close both back doors...
What??? What'd you say???

It's amazing how deep a sub with an f3 of 25hz sounds in a car! ;) I am sure the actual f3 is about the resonance frequency of all stodgy persons' anger!

you setup us the bomb man
make your time!
Reminds me of my summer before college. A friend had two 15" rockford fosgates and I designed a box for him that replaced the entire back seat of his extended cab truck. We put sewer pipe ports on it that had screw on caps to change it from sealed to vented. Wow that thing rocked... until his truck was stolen...

Brian, I actually cannot hear anything below 28 Hz. I can, however, feel those frequencies in the car. Amazing output, very strong all the way to ~20 Hz where my amps rumble filter kicks in.
When I was a teenager I had a pair of MTX Terminator 15" subwoofers driven by a Coustic Power Logic Amp460. Even with my reduced low frequency hearing capabilities this Infinity setup is waaay louder. I really miss that old setup. I sold that setup, must have been 1992 and I bought a quad of RF 10" Punch subs and a Punch 150 amplifier. Eh... I kept the high end in that car though - MB Quart when MB Quart was the s**t! I ran them from a pair of Coustic Power Logic Amp260. Crossed everything over with a Coustic crossover, I think it was XM-3 or something. Alpine 3-disk changer in the dash - remember those? It was a good system, better than most at the time but I did butcher the doors of my Sunbird to get those components in and well, pretty much destroyed the car as a lot of teenagers will do.
If I recall correctly that battery of Punch 10 inchers were sold around 1995 to make way for a pair of Orion subs... I think. Then marriage and a baby and enter the long, dark tea time of the cheap car audio equipment.
Wow what a trip down memory lane.
This is what I did to my doors last weekend: (unfinished)

That looks great. I have a single RF punch he2 running with a coustic 500 watt peak bridged amp in my 1995 nissan altima in a 40l box tuned to about 25hz and it is way more bass than necessary!
