I realize that many on this board have an array of test equipment, but I was wondering if anyone has and uses an audio test CD? I purchased one from one of the other vendors (not PE) that has 42 tracks that test dynamic range, several frequencies from 20 Hz to 20K Hz, and several other things. Until I can afford more sophisticated equipment, this looks like a pretty good alternative. One weird thing about it is that while it will play in a CD player, my PC doesn't even recognize it.

I own and have used several test CDs. Pierre Verany, Stereophile Test 1 and 2, Hi-Fi & Records Review, CBS Records CD-1.
Not sure why your PC doesn't recognize it.
No problems on my Mac.

A few years back, I downloaded (and burned) something with a name like "Bink's Audio Test". Google it. Tones from 20 to 20k, several sweeps, channel IDs, and even some stuff you're NOT supposed to play through yuor system!

Sorry, I can't afford anything anymore, my credit is down the toilet.

thanx for the link.

Would you recommend any of these for use without test equipment? Are they useful (maybe for qualitative freq. tests, do they have good musical examples to test imaging, or speaker position in a room, etc.)? What are test CDs mainly useful for accomplishing?

If a mac is also your personal computer, doesn't that make it a pc?;)

A truly awesome tool! Here's the link (http://binkster.net/extras.shtml) for anyone interested.
I like that the tests for Left, Right, Center, Surround, etc., say the word (i.e., "Left" for left channel). A minor item, but it beats having to refer to the track listing to figure out where it's supposed to be coming from.
Thanks Chris, for point me to this!

The STEREOPHILE CDs are among the best (IMO) very good and very affordable too.

Stereophile Test CD's are very useful. I have also done wonders in-room to capture "real" responce with a simple function generator and a corrected radioshack dB meter.

Yes, but technically a PC is an open architecture most often operating on Micro$oft Windows. Apple is still closed, proprietary.
Since Apple switched to iNTEL processors, there really isn't much of a difference between Mac hardware and PC hardware. Both have USB, both use IDE ATA drives etc, etc, many similarities. That is why you can install and run Windows on a Mac. And I've heard that you can install MacOSX on a PC too, but it's kind of not approved or legal or whatever. But I wouldn't be surprised if one day it will be and then you can go and get whatever hardware you want and whatever OS you want too.
I remember reading in an issue of PCWorld magazine, that the fastest laptop running Windows was a Mac!
I don't make these things up, I'm always prepared to back up my statements with facts, evidence.

Not quite sure what you mean, but be careful with the profanity, if the moderators see it they might kill the discussion.
Good ole Johnny cussed me out and the moderators nixed the PC/Battery thread for good.
