Touch interfaces were brought up in the "PC Help" thread that went off the deep end about 2 pages ago so some of you will probably find this interesting.

Personally I think this guy has it dead on. Not sure if the device will look exactly like how he has it visioned but I think it will be pretty close.

Interesting. Well, multi-touch is beginning to catch on, but I think it will still be a few years until it's the de facto standard. The new Apple computers are becoming multi-touch, at least somewhat.
Personally I'm looking forward to the day when your computer routinely understands everything you say to it. Even better than touch.
So far it's IBM that leads the way with voice recognition.

It might never completely replace the mouse but I think this shows the potential. I think it would interesting to so what could be done in 3D (sketchup or Solidworks) with this interface. Or maybe even more interesting gaming.

It also shows that touch on the display (for the desktop) is pretty much a waste of time and useless.

Voice recognition Star Trek style could be interesting as a interface. It could never be a replacement though. Trying to use Solidworks or Photoshop with voice dictations would be pretty interesting.

... especially to the guy sitting in the next cube over from you

... or if the guy in the next cube is also giving his computer voice commands and starts telling your computer what to do

... or if the radio is on and Mylie Cyrus starts telling your computer what to do

... or it misinterprets your search command for "Parts Express" as "Part Se* Press" and you have to explain it to your wife

;)

Voices are like fingerprints, each one is different, unique. If a computer/software is smart enough, it will be able to not only recognize voice commands, but whether or not it is you who is speaking as opposed to someone else. It will have the ability to ignore other voices and extraneous noises and be able to distinguish the difference between a real live person speaking and a song playing on the radio.

Did you ever see the movies "2001" or "2010?"
