Do you guys really purchase these high quality components when building your system. To build a 12db low pass sub-crossover @ 100HZ would cost nearly as much or even more than the drivers itself...Geeeeeezzz!
Even with steel core inductors and electrolytic caps?
What will the speakers be hooked up to? If you're using a receiver, you can set a HP filter(set to small) in the menu.
Or go REALLY passive:
A small sealed box. They roll off at 12dB on their own. Unless you were trying to reach a 24dB/oct acoustic roll-off and were planning on that already.

who builds passive sub xovers?

Yeah, it would be cheaper probably to buy a dedicated sub amp with an adjustable crossover in it. Or buy an active crossover, you'll probably use it over and over again for a long time, it'll serve you better than an inductor and a cap.

True, and that's why you should not use passives @100 Hz. Buy a sub amp w/ built in low pass.

There are several different things you can do to keep costs under control. For example, I watch for deals like this (http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=269-146) (buyout surplus crossovers that you can strip for parts).
You also need to shop around. There are sources for salvaged parrts (Google Apex Jr., etc.), as well as tradeoffs that can be made. For example, many believe that the impact of electrolytics in the lower frequency range is minimal. Again, P.E. is by far my first and primary supplier,:) however for some parts I go to Erse (http://www.erseaudio.com/) for crossover components.

I should have said, don't make the same mistakes I made... Spend a lot of time learning learning both the theory and the reality of crossover design. Textbook formulas only go so far, so be sure you have a design that is really going to do what you intend for it to do, before:( you stock up on a lot of parts. Spend a lot of time reading this site and asking questions. There are some outstanding technical references on here that are very happy to share their knowledge and experience.:)
