As far as I know PE is a distributor, not a manufacturer. I've never looked into it so I guess I could be wrong.

Dayton Audio and Parts Express go hand-in-hand; I think Dayton is PE's "brand" as such. So I guess you should really be asking whether Dayton will put out a reference quality mid-range. :)

Edit: Check out the colours/styling of the Dayton logo - They look pretty similar to me...

I don't know. i have always hoped for a dedicated high efficiency wide band (if thats not an oxymoron) midrange driver from them.

If you are really desperate you could look for custom built stuff. Tang band? or Eminence! Eminence is all about OEM stuff...although they are more geared towards pro sound. That is not to say that they couldn't do it. just saying.

I have been hoping and waiting for Dayton Audio to come out with a doped paper cone or carbon-fibre cone Reference Series line of drivers for a long time.....I like the aluminum cone, don't get me wrong here, BUT some sort of doped pulp-paper cone, Nomex fiber, or Carbon Fiber cone would be sooooo much more musical and natural sounding......at least to my ears. Nomex cone material would rock!! I realize Peerless uses such materials, but the specs all seem to be geared towards having to use Passive Radiators instead of the usual porting...and the sealed alignment stuff seems to fall short of Dayton Audio's Reference Series performance/size ratio. At least it seems that way to me, anyway.
Also, a Reference series with a Titanium cone material might be interesting.

Just out of curiosity (since I always preferred poly cones until I built my little desktop speakers using the aluminum cone Speakercraft buyout), if you use a driver within it's proper passband and distortion profiles are kept low - how can a person tell a poly cone from a paper cone from a metal cone from an unobtanium cone?

Detail, detail, detail. If you want to hear what is on the recording, the cone has to be piston like through out it's linear travel and softer cone drivers are not capable of detail reproduction equal to hard cone drivers even though they may measure well. Distortion measurements are just one tool in an accomplished crossover designers tool kit. I think that is overlooked a lot in the discussions here.

My $.02 worth...

Dayton either is or is not PE's "house brand". I don't have enough info either way, but I seriously doubt PE would let solen.ca (or anyone else) distruibute Dayton if they actually manufactured it, which leads me to believe they are 2 completely separate identities.

Either way, the only Dayton products I own appear to be manufactured by Eminience (I recognize the parts).

I also used to think Dayton might be PE's house brand but not so much anymore, and since it doesn't really matter I don't really care enough to find the facts. If someone else does, I'm mildly interested.

Dayton has their own website, so I'm betting they are a completely separate entity.

The Pro woofers are totally manufactured by Eminence for Dayton. The frames and motors are identical to a few Pro Eminence products sold at PE.

Dayton is definitely PE's house brand. Darren was instrumental in bringing the Reference Series to life, from what I recall. Dayton may sell to other outlets, but PE, I'm sure, gets the best deals on Dayton gear.

I’ve been buying from PE for many years, and Dayton was started as the PE house brand. From past discussions, PE does not manufacture any of the Dayton items, but has them made OEM to spec. It’s likely that the two are now separate corporations, as that’s usually what happens, but Dayton was definitely started as the PE house brand and is probably owned by PE.

I really didn’t think it was that long ago that we used to have the threads about which is better the Shiva II or the DVC12, with many posters swearing they were the same driver.

I think the relationship is a little tighter than just "house brand" - when the PE site and forums where off line during the xmas period for all of outside the US, so was the Dayton Audio site - the moment the PE site came back on line so did the Dayton site.......

They basically were. The Tempest and DVC15 were a little more different, but still close enough to use the same boxes.

All were sourced from Eminence. :D

While Dayton and PE are basically two peas in a pod, Speaker City does sell Dayton drivers as well.
