View Full Version : 6.5's,7's&8's are for mids, let's see monkey coffins !
some have said they have seen enough small woofer two ways and mtm's , i'm with them ! it was nice to see JeffB's speakers to be one of the best heard , and guess what ? it was not a lunch box size two way or another mtm.it was a three way with a woofer size woofer .i will give credit where it is due and say that there are two ways and mtm's that are totally awesome in design, sound quality and spl . some are quite surprising as to what they can do for their size .enough is enough ! what can be asked or done that hasn't been asked or done ? there are proven designs in each and even kits available for each , pick one ! but for all out full range speakers that don't require subs to produce room filling sound , where are they ? like it's been said ,"build them big and put them where they go,you don't have to move them !" so who is planning monkey coffins ? donc

Cabinet construction has begun. The plan at this time includes two constrained layers (roofing material) sandwiched within layered HDF panels. HDF, HDF, CL, HDF, HDF, CL, HDF, HDF. Epoxy resin between each layer, clamped to wide radius forms until cured. D, Rose is ambitious to say the least. He's planning for their debut at InDIYana.

Looks like a nice solid design, and its got curves ! :D
I hope they make sure the rooms at InDIYana can cope. Putting something like that on a stage which is open underneath could cause real bass problems.

That is an interesting design. It must be nice to have such a skilled woodworker realizing your designs. A few questions, if I may.
Why have you chosen two damping layers, rather than one?
Why are you mounting the woofers low? Floor bounce?
Who calculated the internal volume?

Pete, that would be a coffin for a very special monkey.

Absolutely took me totally by surprise to have D, Rose volunteer to realize this system. I can't wait to get some drivers in it and start fashioning the XO.
A few questions, if I may.
Why have you chosen two damping layers, rather than one?
Following a suggestion by another builder. The back panel is being built first to see how this technique will work
Why are you mounting the woofers low? Floor bounce?
The sub is mounted low to eliminate baffle step loss for the woofer.
Who calculated the internal volume?
That would be me. It's a rough calculation, but probably well within 10%. I approximated with triangles and trapezoids.
3 cubic feet in this configuration will easily hold a chimp

I found it an interesting shape so I made my own volume calculation and got 3.03ft3 I wondered if it had been CAD'ed to that spec, which I why I asked.
I forgot, scan to 3:00 in this:

bigger box needed...

Thanks for the confirmation of volumetric displacement.
How did you calculate it? Triangular approximations like I did?

Hey Pete,
This looks like a cool project.:D
I almost did the same kind of design instead of the Blades. I have a pair of TCSounds TC1000 12" subwoofers that I was thinking of combining with Scanspeak Revelator 5-1/4" mids and RS28A or retrofitted F tweeters that I would recycle from previous projects. I will probably do this project in the future, probably sealed for the sub in about 2-2.5 ft3 and maybe open back tube for the midrange.

Thanks Dan. Coming from you, that means something extra. Sorry to "steal" your project.
By the way, the Blades do fit the definition of monkey coffins for sure!!!!

I have some thoughts I'll post in your RS315 3way thread, which I just now noticed!

Here's a speaker that does not apologize for its size:
http://www.audio-trek.net/diyAudio/PaintedGecko.JPG
The bottom enclosure is a 20" by 20" by 24" deep box with a 15 inch Lambda TD15S.
The upper baffle is 20" wide by 24" tall with a tapered-damped transmission line for the midrange. The midrange is a PHL 1120.
The two tweeters are a OW1 and a G2si - I built both tweeters into the baffle so that I could A-B compare them to decide which one to ultimately select. (I only used one at a time)

Love those AE woofers.
Mine happen to be the original Lambda's - built by Nick himself (with anodized aluminum phase plug instead of polished)
I love them too - I have never heard a better woofer :)

The Beasties are slated for "as-soon-as-its-warm-enough-to-cut". 3-way MTMW 42"tall, 9"W, 16" Deep. Big enough? Will likely weigh 60+lbs/ea when done.

Yeah, you could get a monkey or two in there.

Here are some pure monkey coffins I'm currently working on...
http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w250/pnwright3/Raptors/Raptors012.jpg
The "Raptors" are SEAS W26FXs in about 100 liters. Horns are the 18 Sound XT1464 with ND1460A compression drivers.
Here's a link to a thread with more info...

My dad has an old pair of "monkey coffins" that have been on the shelf for some time. Realistic Optimus-5, from the '70's. They don't sound very good anymore, likely due to a combination of "aging" issues. I have been trying to convince him to do something with them, either gut them and make new monkey coffins, or let me refurbish them. There is conflicting information on the internet, these were either made by KLH or KEF, either way if some life was brought back into them they would be rather nice speakers, apart from the paper cone tweeter.
If gutting the cabinets, I would be looking at the Seas A26RE4 and probably a Seas 27TDFC tweeter. However, I don't think the baffle will be easy to remove on these cabinets, so that may be out of the question.
If refurbishing, there are a multitude of issues I could look at. Old dried up caps, worn out pots that need a good cleaning, AlNiCo drivers that have lost their charge...
I've given the old man some options, so maybe this summer we can make something new out of old real deal monkey coffins.

My first project this spring will be a pair of monkey coffins. 15" woofer, 6.5" mid and a cone tweeter. It is gonna be fun!
