Can somebody tell me what this is? (what I can guess from the pic is it's a "low profile" woofer/sub with the motor on the inside of the cone...)

Looks like a heatsinked version of a formerly sold 'Illusion Audio' (Peerless India) product, and was just as you describe.
I've never seen that one before however.

I'd really like to find some measurements of the woofers - will keep looking...
The Illusions used to be one of the drivers of choice in car-audio installs, as they fit shallow areas, and were uber-responsive and very sensitive. The woven-carbon-fiber cones didn't hurt anything either I presume. I always wanted to hear a pair.
Another lead- Acoustic Research used to use the Illusion 8" or 10" in a shallow on-wall 3-way speaker that Crutchfield sold. They don't sell it any longer.
