Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder...show us the ugly ones!
Here's one I found yesterday.

Yeah... these guys are ugly, but in a fascinating way. They look like Howard the Duck crossed with some Pokemon figure. Kind of a huge-sucking-mouth-thing. Or maybe like the plant in Little Shop of Horrors. Whatever it is, I wouldn't want to be around them when they're hungry!

I always thought the B&W stuff was ugly :O
I also thinkusing pin cushion frames and/or frames truncated on all four sides goes a long way to making a speaker ugly.

Well, you didn't restrict this to commercial products so I'll submit these:

Hey I used that Radio Shack mid to mod a pair of 8" two-ways, right around that time, in fact(may have been '87)!
I used all Radio Shack parts: An 8" woofer, that mid, and one of their piezo supertweeters, the square box one. Put in a three way OTS xo with selectable xo points (), mounted the woof and mid in the original holes, and velcro'd the tweet to the top of the cab!
Good Times!:)
Mark
PS: I'm pretty sure that Wolf has a pair of those mids, waiting to be used in something....

The price is also ugly, $50k per pair:

Funny that-
I have 4 of the mids, sold 4 of those tweeters to JohnnyRichards, and traded some cabinets for 4 of those woofers that I had to Shawn. I coulda built 4 of those!!!:D:eek:

You'd think for $50K they could get those ribbons in there straight.
Nice wood, but uuggglly speaker.

Those drivers must have enjoyed a long production run! My best friend build a pair of speakers in wood shop class when we were in Jr High, ~1977. He used those same mids and tweeters, but with the RS 10" woofers. I think the cabinets were solid mahogany...and BIG!

Setting aside questions of what happens with a pair of tweeters that far apart, recognise anything here from the PE catalogue:

Linn's warranty section claims that you need the original packing in order for a warranty or return. Now where to store....

There are a couple of extraordinary exceptions, but for the most part speakers made of PVC pipe look ugly to me --> http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&source=hp&q=pvc+speaker&rlz=1R2DKUS_en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=R72OS6ObBcqztgfcjomiCw&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CCAQsAQwAw

Wow, that's quite a markup for the Dayton 150 and Behringer amps...
I am somewhat curious what a stylized "D" might have to do with Linn Audio, but maybe that's just me....:D
Also, nice photoshopping....wow this guy is really something.

Haha, I actually bought the B&C DE500's I used on my latest project from that guy (David Linn). Nice guy and I got a good deal... I have some email back and forth where I asked him some questions about those speakers with some "interesting" replies... My favorite part (aside from the admission that the ribbon tweeters are just there for show and to be able to claim flat to 40kHz) was when i asked him what he does to account for the CTC spacing of the 15's to the DE500 used as a "mid", especially since his XO is 1500hz. His answer was to the effect of 'they measure +/-3dB when sitting in the optimal seating location'. The vertical axis must be a MESS on these things  (the ribbons are crossed in at 8kHz FYI).

Wait what?
"We have also modified this amp to replace key components so that the overall performance is of a high-end quality." The amp replaces key components?
"It is so pure, that it can rival many tube amps for low distortion, and sonic purity."
Think everybody should just stop buying the Dayton amps and buy this amp from Linn for only around 15 times more money...

I like the barrel speakers (post #5). Not what you'd put in your living room for HT, but pretty neat for the garage or bar.
I've also seen those "log" speakers before. I believe they were carved out by hand, and were intended to be but in a log cabin at the lake. Surely in the right setting they would not appear out of place.

From the site:
"The Class AB amplifier with 16-bit DAC is capable of outputting 80mW and 5W for the power and headphone, amplifiers respectively."
I really hope the didn't really mean that 5 watts into a pair of headphones but only 80 mW into the speaker... whoops!
I believe this one tops the other pic....

I am thinking that the drivers only cost 10% of the total price, which is probbaly pretty average for a lot of 250 dollar speakers. Especially ones that don't use a square MDF enclosure. I think they are hideous (almost all square frame drivers are ugly to me lol), but not anywhere near the ripoff level of a lot of commercial offerings, even those at the same price.

Those are waaaay too big for that room. I think they are even photo-shopped into the picture--no shadow below or around them, spikes don't appear to touch the floor......
OTOH, if you show this pic to your spouse as your next project, whatever you really want will be a 'gimme:D

so which chair/bench/couch is the "optimal seating location" with the ±3db response in that room?
I've also seen those "log" speakers before. I believe they were carved out by hand, and were intended to be but in a log cabin at the lake. Surely in the right setting they would not appear out of place.
yeah, but they'd still sound terrible, with their stock crossover. i think they're still for sale on ebay for like $2,000 or so.
also, you'd think for $250 speakers painted with rustoleum in a hammered metal finish, a builder could spring for the extra $4 to get the nickel-plated or gold-plated binding posts instead of the plastic ones...
With a good contour filter, the M3N will play to 18 kHz. It's not that bad.

What else is funny is that the speakers are identical. For all we know there is only ONE speaker in existence.

Wow, the are still there. (http://cgi.ebay.com/RUSTIC-LOG-SPEAKERS-100-Watt-8-ohm-Dayton-Reference-New_W0QQitemZ260484905811) $600 Buy it Now with free shipping. Shipping can't be cheap for those. What is crazy is I saved the image from an eBay auction on 9/14/2008 and they are still for sale. Must not be a lot of demand for log speakers. Not that they are ugly or anything like that. :D

I'm pretty sure this is a 3d rendering... probably stolen from some 3d rendering site... :)
And then the speakers are copy paste onto that... looks bad and does most definitely not help him sell those ugly things...

Ugliest speaker? I just remembered I have a photo of my first effort way back at a real speaker. MDF cut with a skill saw. Too bad I don't have any skill for that saw. ;)
Funny thing, I sold that speaker to a friend of mine looking just as it is. He planned to clean it up and make it look nice, but two years later has still done nothing to it. At least it sounds fairly well.
