Halldor-
I built those about 4 years ago, and they were a big hit, if only for looks alone. I can also say I did it before the guy with his Rubik-sub, the commercial ELAC sub, and the DIY ipod-dock.

I guess I'm a trend-setter.

Arlis- Most of these have been built over the last 10 years, so it's not all recent stuff. The 'Attitudes' will be most of my objective today.:D

Wolf,

You have "interesting" finishing choices. But, after having built a couple of your designs I can say that you are a master. As well as an ambassador of the hobby to those of us who struggle to get started. Thanks for some great designs and you never ending help.

But...where's the Marianas?:D

And, I totally agree with Don, you are indeed a great ambassador/mentor for the hobby!

Mark

That's not even all of them. I didn't load the Zukini as it was kinda a flop in design, and my 'first' project was never posted on-line.

The 'Marianas' I did not post due to the fact the amp was made with an AC/DC PSU that I built, drivers that are NLA, and a lot of time and size make them definitely not an easy task.

Mark- you should poke around my Photobucket again to see what is up and coming, as there are quite a few rising fast!

Thank you for your kind words! I kinda like to think I took you and Donnie under the wing, sorta. You 2 have come a long way!

Ambassador??

'Interesting' as black-boxes don't cut it for me. There are a variety of shades in the color spectrum of light to be utilized and appreciated, and it also helps differentiate one project from the next.

*shux!* Between you and Mark, I could come across as a heavenly gift or something...

Master? It's just fun, Donnie!

Saint Wolfy...hmmm has a good sound to it :)

Icthus is definitely my favorite looks wise, wish I could have heard it.
Scandvifa's are definitely one of the best two ways I've ever heard.

Mr. East! Any updates?

I need to finish assembly on the second one yet, but I'm happy with its sound as is. Should be great for the desktop. I guess I have to update the schematic, but xover'd at 60Hz and up, these do surprisingly well.

Taterworks is supposed to be modelling up a tapped horn for the W5-1138 to go along with it. We'll see how these turn out as a set.

A need to adapt this schematic as well. The series resistor on the tweeter should be a 2.5 ohm for the purist, but 2 ohms is not bad at all.

Wolf,

You know my goal in life is to create and build just half as many speakers as you. Plus I would not be at my current skill level without your help and aid.

Keep up the great work and Thanks!

Why- thank you, Ed! For being at it only a year or two, you've built quite a few. Mine have been over the last 11 years. I did have a couple years where I built 6 pair though...
Thanks!

Sweet. That's got to be the coolest big little design I've seen. Even as I was reading your last post I was thinking, "A micro horn-loaded sub would be sweet for this project..."

I like working with wood, so, uhm, not really.:D I have dabbled a bit at other things, and I made my wife a purple-stained jewelry box.

No- I really only have the one hobby- 'pursuit of audio in general'.

Heya Wolf -

I'd been holding off on modeling the tapped horn (or ML-TH) until I heard from you whether you really wanted the design. I'll get right on the modeling.

Cheers!

nice work!
how is that LAT low frequency transducer???

Wolf
04-01-2010, 10:48 PM
Since it's the small one, I get about 50-60 Hz or so from it. It did more than I was expecting it to, and it sounds very articulate. Need I also say that 10 pistons moving simultaneously is really cool to watch?
Thanks for the compliment!

Hi there,
you have some incredible looking projects.I am working on a couple of projects involving the Typhany LAT 250's . I was wondering on you Tymphany-Hi-Vi project; what x-over freq's and slopes did you use. If you read the Typhany web sire info it suggests no higher than 140hz low pazz cross poit. I know they go further out than that , so was just curiious what you used
thnx

I xover'd just shy of 800 Hz, but- it will likely play to about 1kHz if you can damp the resonance about 1.2kHz- it's a bad sound, just don't go that high.

Being that you can't run a true delta-Mass test on it, I took a guess on the Vas spec, and I used 15 ltrs sealed. It gets down to about 50-60 Hz. Venting is not a good idea.

The increased DCR of using 2 coils and the steeper 3rd electrical slope really make it easier to use, as well as attenuating the resonance enough.

Let me know if I can help more...

Just wondering here, what do you use to get such a High gloss finish on the red ones and what did you use as the under coat. I really like the look of whatever it is. And does it come in blue?

Wolf
07-29-2010, 01:16 PM
It was a 5-6 step process, if you mean the Sophomores. Yes it comes in Blue, but I don't know how deep the finish will be. Your preparation is the most important step.

edge-fill with Elmer's white school glue, no diluting. Sand cabinet with 150 when dry.
Duplicolor High-Build primer, power sand with 150.
Duplicolor Primer Sealer, hand sand with 220 and 400 grits.

**This should have you ready for paint, if there are no voids or bumps in the sealer coat.**

Then Krylon Hammered Black. This gives the 'pitted look' without being pitted.
Duplicolor Metalcast Red, or in your case Metalcast Blue. The Metalcast is a somewhat translucent paint that allows some of the undercoat through for color shading. Don't hit it too hard with Metalcast, or you lose the effect and it gets sorta milky.
Finishing step- Use a polycrylic spray like I did, a clear acrylic enamel, or polyurethane. DO NOT USE LACQUER! the Lacquer and the Metalcast react badly.

I guess Rustoleum hammered works too, but I've not done it. No- the finish is not a cheap one, but it really looks good!

Couple comments

First, that's a lot of projects

You might want to change your fasteners on some of those tweeters though- some of those are diffractive nightmares, and WILL cause significant interference patterns.

Second, I VERY much like the LAT+3"+1" setup. That's very very cool.

First- I don't care. They sound good this way, and I won't stress that issue.

Second, it's a 2" dome, but thanks for the compliment! They sound very articulate and (I know it's a audiophoolery word, but) quick.

Yeah- I'm kinda a power-builder.
