You have some real gifts that many of us wish we had. The 2 that come to mind for me are patience and carpentry magic.

Man, I love those deep bookshelf speakers - looks really cool. I will probably never get a finish that smooth and shiny, but at least I can admire nice work when I see it.

Beautiful!

another quarter wave tapered pipe. this time it's 2.5 design with lower woofer cutoff by an additional 1.6 coil. Project is being worked on but sounds promising.

Hey thanks!
I don't think I'll make it to DIY this year. It's a bit too far for me.

Hmmm... AC/Jordans! I've heard that before, without the 0.5 section, and a smaller AC ribbon. It's not a bad design...

It's Fountec Neo2.0 not Aurum Cantus. Second order crossover at this point.I'll post measurements by the end of the week but so far it looks +/-2db 70hz-18khz. Smooth slow roll off (it's a folded pipe). Off axis response isn't phenomenal to say the best. There are some internal resonances to deal with yet.

Wolf

It looked like a folded Ribbon element, so I thought it was an AC. Founteks are now flat-ribbons, and the previous-gen are folded. Still- it looks supremely viable.

Scan Speak/Seas passive 3 way for a friend. Veneered Trans Lam construction with integrated bracing.

Did you cut all those MDF layers by hand or did you have them CNC'ed? Your work is simply beautiful. You are indeed the Carpenter

r-carpenter
04-28-2010, 07:55 PM
Thanks.
No CNC, set of templets and shaper. Master templet was made for the outside shape. From there, set of templets with different internal pattern was made. Then the parts were cut and glued, veneered etc.

If you dont mind another question. How do you apply your clear finishes with a brush or spray on?

r-carpenter

not at all. spray gun. Binks 2001.

Have you ever tried using polycrylic on any of your designs? If so can it be sprayed?

r-carpenter
05-04-2010, 08:08 AM
If you referring to MinWax finish, yes. Don't like it. It comes as a spray can as well.
I have developed habits for finishes and they are based on how well it protects the surface and how it looks.
If I don't want to build and want low to medium luster: oil finishes are great. Lively look. http://www.garrettwade.com/sutherland-welles-tung-oil-finishes/p/99R01.01/ best oil I've ever tried.
Next best thing is old fashion nitrocellulose lacquer. Mohawk makes excellent version that they call "Piano Lacquer"
And if I REALLY want to build and polish to a closed pore mirror, 2k polyurethanes are hard to beat. These are poisonous high tech coatings and in need of spraying set up and serious ventilation to apply.
All acrylics, water based and some other types of finishes have either a bluish hew or kind of dead appearance. I prefer warm looking translucent coatings that bring out the best in a wood grain.
I don't want to start the war here so, people, use what you like, these are just my personal preferences. :)
As a general statement, you could spray most of the finishes out there. It's just an application method that gives you better even coverage faster.

Really, really nice construction. The patience and time involved on your builds is something I will aspire to. What really threw me is the center channel with all 45* corners. I've tried that before and it's not as simple as it looks. I would like to blame my inexpensive equipment, but we all know it's the operator. :) Robert.
