New House, same old problem.

What do I build to house my equipment?

All I've got is a 13' wall to work with. TV takes up 60" of that.

I've looked at 1000 set-ups here and there from built-ins to every stand unit available.

There's a million ways to do this but as much as I like seeing my equipment protecting it is more important. Central Wisconsin is sand Country and if you didn't vacuum your L.R. daily in a week it looks like the Mojave Desert. I've always liked the look of open storage better but now concerned about all that fine stuff getting inside my equipment. If I go the closed route I'm concerned about heat dissipation which will ruin it likely quicker.

I need alot of space as many components are involved so I'm thinking a stand for TV to house some of the stuff and 2 deep shelved bookcases at either end of the room to house the remainder. I was thinking of building Barrister like cases so I could flip up an acrylic cover to get at my stuff but that has me concerned even more regards heat.

Any ideas and thoughts appreciated.

A sizeable enclosed 'credenza' style TV stand/equipment storage with DIY exhaust fans of the low voltage/silent type should be fairly easy to construct and stylish. Look to Salamander for examples. As for flanking bookcases, avoid the 90's trend which wil have you putting 'bookshelf' speakers in there.....about the WORST possible placement. You gotta let those speakers breathe. Wall mounting the TV above makes servicing easier as there's no longer a need to move the TV. Here's my family room media wall on 12.5 ft...TV is wall mounted. Wife likes the slim towers in 'her' space.

You might want to have a look at this link http://techtalk.parts-express.com/showthread.php?t=214142 if you’re thinking of doing a built-in; Dave Pellegrene’s work is very, very nice.

Thanks for the complement Wayne. Here is the one I built for my HT set up. It has removable sides to hide all the wires and have access to get to them easy. It also has casters on it so I can pull it out to get behind it. Both have come in very handy.
