Why, yes, I believe you could beat that with a pair of these subs and a nice plate amp.

One thing to point out, the 800W they claim is really the "peak" output; the owners manual for the MM-6 says that the average output is 200W. The plate amps available here and elsewhere are rated for their average power, so for an apples to apples comparison keep that in mind.
I haven't seen a 200W plate amp with dimensions as small as the 8" x 8" Mirage sub. Are you trying to strictly match the size of the Mirage?

97 dB max? F3 of 42 Hz? That's not really much to get excited about.

Phil, at first I didn't understand where you were going, but you raise an excellent point. 600 bones can build an amazing subwoofer. (and yeah, I checked the AV stores online; that Mirage sub really is $600!)

Oh yeah, and back to the OP's inquiry... Wolf's "Biumph" or "Tri-umph" sound about right

A tad larger than you asked for (9.5" cube), but that plate amp is kinda the limiting factor.
Moving up a bit more in size (11" cube), there's Roman's Cerberus.

I'm inclined to agree with these above suggestions.
Thanks, Paul!

Years and years ago around 1998 or so I owned one. Sounds like mud in comparison to the scanspeak. My first good home theater had 5 focal diy kits from zalytron. I lived nearby and he let me buy 1 speaker at a time.
Here is a photo of them. I have since upgraded to the 7 inch focal with tlr tweeters. I had 3 subs with the older 5 inch focals all store types a 10 inch maple newtown p1000 an eight inch maple p500 both from cambridge soundworks. and the tiny 6.5 inch cube super whatever. From definitive technology, just about the same as the op is asking about.
The HT was great the bass was wrong..
Those 3 subs cost 1000 plus 800 plus 600 = 2400 hundred total. Bass was wrong audible distortion when played deeply or loudly.
I now have 2 nht1259's ebay special for under 200
a good amp for them -----------------------------600.
A dayton rss390hf-4 -----------------------------150
and a reckhorn amp----------------------------- 225.
total is under------------------------------------ 1275
plus a filter and material around---------------200
grand total-------------------------------------- 1450.
very good bass silly good.
Although If I ever get the chance to listen to pete's build of the 4 dayton rss390's I would have to think it would be better.
By the way the scanspeak will play to 105 db at 30hz. Clear and defined a great musical sub.
