Hi all,

would any one have any ideas on how to implement a subsonic filter to be used on my sub in my jeep cherokee? I have it sealed, but the bass sounds to boomy and muddy. Part of it might be my underbraced box, but that is fixable, but I had the idea today to buy a big cap and essentially high pass the sub. Any idea on what value to use? or is my thinking wrong?

Cross it over lower, maybe.

Agree w/ Johnny. Boomy/Muddy is usually the result of a to high x-over point (IME).

The titanic would probably sound best crossed at 70Hz, or lower.

Or, maybee the box is to small.

I have it sealed, but the bass sounds to boomy and muddy. ?That almost always indicates a cab that's too small, resulting in peaked response in the midbass. Boom and mud is sourced above 80Hz, not below. If anything you probably have the lowpass filter set too high.

I will also add this. The Titanic vs Reference will be that the Titanic is a little boomy-higher/'muddy in the bottom octave'.

It is just not as clean of a driver, but yor xover is probably too high.

Those 20hz high pass FMOD's look like they may help, but it will only solve part of my problem.

You guys nailed it, I have them crossed too high. At what crossover point I don't think I'll tell, but it's high enough that I know better. I have the front doors running off of a 2 channel amp with a adjustable high pass, and the sub is low passed at roughly the same frequency.

The real problem is that the lower I cross the doors, the more they buzz. I mean buzz. Bad enough that I have been living with less then perfect bass. The only solution is to put dynomat all in the front doors to hopefully solve the door rattle, then cross lower. I hesitate because I may not keep the jeep, depends on my job situation. Anyways, I might include those fmod's in my next order from PE.

Im guessing in the 120-150 range, maybe a little higher? You know, missing that octave of 80 to 160 Hz is technically wrong, but in a car with the right music it can work. The brain is adept at adding missing information in the music - Bose makes a killing by ignoring the upper bass and mid-bass in their sad little sub/sat systems.

Another alternative is to install a dedicated 6.5 or 8" woofer in the center console or under the seat playing the missing octave. It allows you to high-pass the front speakers nice and high, low pass the subwoofer nice and low and cover that octave without spending a bunch of money on dampening materials - plus you take the auxiliary woofer with you when you sell it. I did that for awhile in my Alero, it works great unless you use that center console :)

Try 180-200:eek:

It had to be to stop the rattle. Most songs I don't notice it, but the other day I played an old favorite CD by Third Day, and they had an organ at the beginning, and I heard nothing. I kind of thought, hmmm, I guess I am missing that octave:)

Which CD?
I don't have "The Spark", but after that, S/T, Alien-cd-single, Cons. #5, Time(pre-release sampler), Offerings, Carry Me Home (pre-release sampler), Offerings 2, Come Together, and my wife has 2 or 3 beyond those.

The S/T, Cons, and Offerings are my faves.

High-pass the doors as high as necessary to eliminate the problem there, low-pass the sub as low as necessary to remove the excessive mid-bass. If and when you get around to de-rattling the doors you can take the door drivers lower.

That sounds like a good plan, bill. I'll do that tomorrow and see how it sounds.

Wolf, it's number 9 on offerings II - may your wonders never cease. It's the organ in the beginning that is missing in the jeep. It really doesn't sound too bad, just certain songs can be annoying. On the way back from work today I played some new Dave Koz, and some of his songs have too much subsonic bass that it really takes away from the rest of the song. I'd like to experiment with those fmod's and see where that gets me. That, and doing what bill said.

Oh, and wolf, you should buy Chronology number one just to have the new recording of theif. Maybe get it on itunes or something. it rocks. that and it is one of the most moving songs, right up there with cece winans' song 'alabaster box'. Check her out too on itunes.

number 9, not 8. 8 is God of wonders.

I know that. You didn't catch my reasoning...
You said I had wonders, I said God does.
That's all I meant...

Also FYI- Mac wrote that song, "God of Wonders". It first appeard on "City on a Hill".

hehe, I can be pretty clueless sometimes. You're right, He works wonders in ways I will never be able to understand, but I keep trying. First time I heard 'God of wonders' was on the city on a hill cd.

by the way, it's 'thief 2006 (new recording)' on their chronology album. It now has strings, and a solo by Mark at the end. That's all for tonight.

I love the original. The one on Offerings is okay.
I may have to check that one out...
