View Full Version : What model Vifa's used in old school Soundstream car audio?

I've got some old Soundstream car audio speakers and passives built by Vifa. I tried to google to see if I could find the model number but no luck. I'm pretty sure I bought them from PE on a buyout years ago. I never did use them but tossed a box together over the weekend that is no doubt way too big and hooked them up just to see how they sounded and it's baaaaaad.

They are going in a workout room in my garage so I figured even with the passives that come with them that they'd sound really good but it's terrible. I've got to at least get in the ballpark on the enclosure to give them a chance.

The mid is a 5 inch round with a frame painted Soundstream blue. I'm brand new to diy speakers so I figured these would be a place to start to at least make some cabinets. They came out good but I know they are too big for these speakers. I had some scrap leftover from car sub box builds so I tried to go the easy route and make less cuts. These are probably twice as deep as they should be so I want to start again.

I'm sure the passives that came with them aren't great but I'm trying to get my feet wet on something I already have before I start buying new stuff. They are in some plastic cases with the Soundstream stickers on them so I don't even know the vales of what's inside.

The tweeter sounds very quiet and the mid has trouble producing any lows very quickly.

Just looking to see if I can find a model number for the 5 inchers to start figuring out how to calculate a proper sized enclosure.

I don't know anything about the particular SoundStream speakers you are asking about, but here are some of my recent observations regarding my old leftover car audio components. I used my WT3 to measure the T/S parameters of the following car audio midbasses I had laying around:

- SoundStream Reference 5.0 (5.25" stamped steel frame, treated paper cones)

- Boston Acoustic 6.0 LF (6" cast aluminum frame, poly cone with treated fabric dust cap)

- Oz Audio OZ130 (4.5" stamped steel frame, mineral filled cone, soft dust cap)

- Polk Audio MM3000 (6.5" poly cone)

They all had really high Qts and high Fs. I tried to model all of them in software and could not come up with a decent box alignment that would play below 80 Hz. Obviously they were build to run nearly IB in a car door and have a subwoofer to fill in the bottom octave or two. Also I was very disappointed in the quality of the components used in their crossovers. I'm not trying to be discouraging to you, just sharing what I discovered. Hope this helps.

Yeah I've got a ton of car audio stuff lying around.

These are the only ones I even considered because these look like diy/home audio speakers packaged for car audio. The crossover frequencies may be all wrong for home audio though. The plastic crossover units say Soundstream PC 3 on them but I can't even find anything that tells me what the crossover point is. I guess I can just pry the top off and take a look.

I need to take a picture of them and figure out how to post pics on here. The mids don't look like typical car audio speakers and have 8 screw holes in them which I've never seen in typical car speakers either.

They are very nicely built and feel very sturdy so I had high hopes for them.

I remember back in '97-'99(after '99 in lost track) Soundstream made real good $hit. The car amps would run pretty hot, but were awesome. 'Never coughed up the dough for the speakers though. I'm anxious to know if Soundstream is still a worthy company...

Are those the cast-frame EXACT components, the coax, or the stamped component set? I might still have the advertisement flyer somewhere...

Wolf,

They are in fact the cast frame components. I found some pics of the Exact 5.3 and they look very similar to those but would have been prior to the exact series based on the passive units. I have some Exact 4.2 coax still and the passive crossover units for the Exact were much better quality with the clear plexi covers. The ones I have are sealed black plastic. But the drivers look the same.

As far as the 5's themselves. They look just like to ones from the 5.3 except they don't have the black stuff on top of the frame around the cone. It's just the bare metal frame. Also it doesn't have the SS Exact magnet cover. It's a plane magnet.

The tweeter is identical. Madisound used to sell them not too long ago. I checked their site and they no longer carry them. They came with a surface mount option and an angled wedge type one as well. Just don't recall the model number.

Any luck finding that flyer Wolf?

Sorry, but I think I tossed it... :(

It may be awhile, but if I do come across it, I'll let you know. Who knows if I'll see it somewhere else in my files...

Sorry for now,
