View Full Version : ND105-8 = $9.99 (9/22 ONLY!) MTM for less than TM with -4?

The ND105-8 is on sale for $9.99 until Nov. 15th.
What do you experienced folks think of the 8 ohm version versus the 4 ohm? I know the four has had its share of the spotlight since the series was introduced, is this simply because of its impedance or are there other considerations as well?

The 105-4 was on sale earlier this year for $12. The -4 does model better in the same box.

I haven't measured the 105-8.
I like the 105-4 over ALL the other small ND woofers because it has the lowest Qts (I measured 0.48 IIRC) making it the best for use in a ported box, but $10 is AWFUL cheap.
Using WinISD (Pro - alpha), I like the -8 in 0.40 cf, tuned to near 41 Hz with a 1.5"d x 6" long vent. Rear venting is best. The box is a bit bigger than what I've used for the -4, but the -8 should actually reach a little lower. I get an F3 of around 36 Hz. This should be able to take 20-25w below 40Hz w/out bottoming out.
You can put an ND105-8 MtM in a 0.75 cf (PE?) box.
Use a 2"d x 5" long rear vent. Fb = 42, F3 = 36.
HP for ND20FA-6 (positive polarity):
5.6uF series cap, followed by a #20 0.15mH shunt coil (to gnd).
L-pad: 3 ohm series resistor, 3 ohm parallel
Low pass for 2 105-8s in parallel:
#18 0.55mH series coil.
Zobel with a 2 ohm resistor and a 4.7uF cap.
Around 85dB +/-2dB with about 2-3dB of baffle step. Fc at 4.3 kHz.
Very solid 4 ohm design. Bass minima of 4.1n from 200-250 Hz.
9n @ 2.5k, tweeter minima of 3.6n around 8k.

These little guys are very good demonstration of Hoffman's law. 0.75 cubic feet for a pair 4" woofers :)
The price, however, is very nice and I would think the MTM approach should give a very satisfying near field bass experience.

Even though they have a humongoid Xlim of +/-10mm, I use 6mm for Xmax when modeling, but let them approach 8mm in the extreme. They've got the output of a 6-1/2" Classic, and aside from sensitivity issues, the MtM should be the equivalent of an 8" 2-way (not reaching QUITE as low, but in a box half the size) or the Venerable Dayton D-III (but reaching lower in about the same volume). From the Dayton graphs, these ARE a tad "rough" through the passband though, like +/- 3dB.

Yeah, .75 cu ft is too big for 4"...I would be happy for these to just go down to mid 50hzs.

I have to apologize, the pricing at $9.99 per driver was a data entry error and the ND105-8 will be adjusted tomorrow to the $19/driver that was supposed to be entered. We will be leaving the $9.99 up for the rest of the day, so ORDER THEM UP (http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=290-214) before the price is adjusted!!!!!!

WOW... thx! That's got to be the best marketing ever. Just bought 10. I wasn't going to buy before, but I would be an idiot not to buy some now. I bought 12 ND105-4s before, but I sold 4 for my friend to upgrade his car.
hmm...10 ND105-8 and 8 ND105-4, what to do with them now...
