This project worked out pretty well. These speakers are the L&R main speakers in a 7.1 surround sound system as a result, most of the mid is handled by the center speaker, making this 2-way design adequate in terms of frequency response. My chief design goal was good bass extension in a modestly sized box, a tight high-end, and something that I could build as a speaker newbie, but reasonably skilled woodworker. The down-venting was a design addition ... after I bought the drivers I realized that the vent needed to be longer than the depth of the box that I had planned, so I decided to down vent it to use the height of the box. I was a little nervous about whether this would work out well. In the end, it did work, and these mid-sized speakers provide a very clean low end as well as the tight high-end that I wanted. I'd welcome your observations and suggestions.

Nice work, nothing wrong with down firing vents. Thats what I've utilized, but I came across some flares for the bases of my towers to couple the port to the floor. Basically ripped off Polk Audio's design in that area, works great...
