These are JKim's design from Zaphs contest. His design was the only acoustic LR 2nd order design entered. The drivers are Zaph's ZA14W08 and Acoustics SB29RDCN, approx. price is $ 250.00. Jkim's write up and crossover are on Zaph's webpage. I decided to try a trapezoidal enclosure, keeping the baffle the same dimensions. The width is 8", height is 14", depth is 12" , and the back is 4.75 approx. .36 cu ft volumn. I cut the angles at 7 degrees. I'm not happy with the finish, but since this was an experiment I will put another set of speakers in them and do another build for these. They deserve a better enclosure. I'm showing them at KYDIY with a quick voicing with Robert tomorrow night. So when someone sends you an email and ask you if you're willing to build and extra pair of speakers and all you have to buy is the crossover parts, say yes. Thanks Jkim & Zaph! Who's got a name for them? :D

After this KYDIY weekend and Zaph's contest, maybe "The Seconds". :D They are sweet sounding for the size. Tim

Did you modify the crossover during the pre-show voicing? Any comments about the drivers themselves? Overall comparisons to other speakers?

The crossover is exactly as JKim's original design for Zaph's contest. I believe most or all had positive comments on the drivers. Wolf and Froste can give a better opinion and I hope they do here. The only comment from both of them was the tweeter needed another 1/2 ohm or so, to pad the SB29 Tweeter down a tad. I thought that when I was voicing them a day and a half before the DIY, but thought I would take them there to get the expert"s opinions.

This was my 1st time to here the ZA14s, and I liked how they sounded. I did think the SB29s were a bit "hot", a .5-1.5 ohm more padding would make a good sounding speaker even better. The CKYDIY room was making some tweeters sound somewhat "hot", so I'm not sure just how much pad is needed. Over all it was a very good sounding speaker, now I have another driver (ZA14) that I'll have to get. Maybe a Mid in a 3-way tower or 2.5 monitor. The list keeps getting longer. Can't wait for the next event to hear some more great speakers.

I switched R1 from 5.6 ohm to 6.8 ohm resistor last week. I believe the padding really helped and took the sizzle out. Hopefully I can take them to St. Louis for another gathering. So thanks for your opinions Wolf and Froste. "The Prefects", maybe now. :D
