I am thinking really hard about doing something like this.

He says its ~.8 Ft^3

I have a 12" JBL GTO 1204D laying around, Im thinking about using that, although JBL recommends 1 Ft^3 for a sealed application. I need to do this on the cheap. Please offer your thoughts, ideas, comments, alternate driver suggestions ect..

That's a great installation! I've always had a great appreciation for mobile installations that don't compromise the interior (much) or overall utility. For that kind of install, I probably would have gone for a 10 incher. Might have been a little easier? Lol

The box probably would have been the same amount of trouble either way, and that looks like an IDQv3 12" which should work fine in a smaller box and have a little more output than a 10".

I like 10s myself, but have noticed over the years of being a constant fixture at the local 12v store (friends with owner and employees there and often hang out to see what's new) that typical customer in the car audio world is often set against 10" woofers. People come in wanting 12" subs because their friends have 12" subs and they don't really know anything else about it except for the misguided myth that 10"s won't play as deep as 12s.

I bet being so close to the floor makes that cabinet act almost as a bandpass type of enclosure. Rather than being in open air like a speaker usually is, it is 'coupled' with the air that is trapped under it out to the ends of the cabinet-or seat in this case. It possibly could cause it to dig a little deeper this way as opposed to just sitting forward in the back seat. Or not. :)

That's a really nice installation, I like it. I personally would have opted to keep the stock seat height and go for a smaller (shallower) driver to make it fit. But it's a good use of unused space and was nicely done I think.

Before committing to using that 12" driver, I suggest building a test box with the equivalent volume and see if you like how it sounds. Alternatively, build the box in a way that allows you to swap out the entire baffle, rather than committing to a baffle with a cutout for a 12" driver.

The reason I'm suggesting this is that you may not like the sound of a 12" driver mounted in a box that's a bit too small for it. You may prefer the sound of a smaller driver that is able to achieve a lower Qb with the same box volume.

Another thing is that the GTO 1204D is vented out the rear - check the installation instructions to see how much clearance JBL recommends that you leave between the magnet structure and the nearest cabinet wall.
