I'm interested in building a bass cab for my son, using 4 Goldwood Monterey 10in pro drivers (GW-10120), and some complementary compression horn tweeter arrangement with cross-over.

I'm leaning toward a ported (bass-reflex) design in order to provide a lower (deeper) bass extension for his metal music, as opposed to a sealed (infinite baffle), but open for opinions on that. He needs the tweeter to allow for the guitar growl harmonics & his electronic effects. Starting with a 500W bass head, but anticipating replacement with a 1000W head before long.

Has anyone already built such a beast, or can provide me with some guidance on design & XO? (haven't yet found anything in the Gallery/plans here or elsewhere for 4x10)

For that kind of money you might want to stick with a more reliable name brand like Eminence. The claim of 500w power handling may be attractive to you, but in even an ideal bass reflex box it is surely displacement limited to 200 maybe 300 watts at best. I haven't plugged it into bassbox but I'm giving you an educated guess. I can help you out a little more later.

First of +1 on the real world power handling issues.

1, the Qts of that speaker would suggest the best option is a ported box.

2, if you need truly deep bass, most pro tens in a conventional reflex cab will start to crap out at about 50hz, and they will become extremely displacement limited anywhere near this point, so consider a larger driver.

3, you would be far better off driver wise with the Eminence BP102 ($15.00 less each) or the S2010 (less weight).

Consider maybe a 2 X 10 (S2010) cab sitting above a 1 X 15 (C2515 or 3015LF). ALSO Deeper bass will tend to come from a sealed cab. This will also help with power handling related to displacement, Reflex cabs are effectively dead below the port frequency. (the C2515 might do everything you need all by itself)
