Well, I cut a couple of 1cf MTM PE baffles to accept a rear mounted TB 75-1558SE, along with the Peerless 830884 and SEAS 22TFF. Ryan (DoubleTap) and I then cut a chamfer/roundover on the front of the baffle for the TB mid, and took some sweeps of the drivers.

I cannot believe that Peerless woofer is NLA. That thing has really excellent performance, with very low distortion top to bottom. 1% peak around 800Hz and the rest well below .3%, all the way down to below 100Hz. The TB mid, from 600Hz on up has vanishingly low levels of THD, and that particular mounting scheme provides for a response that looks like it already has a bandpass filter applied. It is very well behaved. Same thing can be said for the SEAS tweeter. Above 2000Hz, a very low distortion, very smooth responding tweeter. With the crossover targets we have in mind, this thing should be amplifier-like in its linearity.

I suppose the HDS woofer could make an adequate substitute for the 830884, which would allow for others to make this project. But the cost of that mid might be a bit prohibitive for some . . .

1) Pics, or it didn't happen.

2) If the Morel mid has a Neo motor, it's likely to become as unfeasible as the Tang Band very shortly.

3) A lot of Tymphany's recent decision-making around the Peerless brand (such as discontinuing all use of Nomex/paper, and not bringing the non-truncated frame into wider production use) doesn't make sense to me.

We used what was on hand, and the TB mid was tops on the list to get used in something.

No plans on using a 2" dome mid.

Mounted the way it is, with the flange hidden, that 3" dome has a real engaging quality on the baffle. Your eyes are definitely drawn to it due to the unusual look.

Pics will come soon enough.

That looks like a heck of a nice speaker! That 830884 sure is one nice woofer...

I assume that it is a sealed cabinet based on the size. Try putting it in a ported tower, it can make some surprisingly nice bass as well.

It's the PE 1cf MTM cabinet, and it is ported at the moment, though hardly optimized for that particular woofer.

In this size cabinet it can do F3 of about 42hz, but the F10 is around 26hz so it's a pretty slow rolloff.

Any thoughts on the sound of the 22TFF?

Just ran sweeps so far with the tweeter. No music yet. We did run both the mid and woofer with music full range though. Interesting . . .

A preliminary XO was modeled up, but has yet to be wired up for listening.

The potential for that tweeter is high. Very smooth response and low distortion above 2500Hz.

Wait, what? Peerless is disco'ing the Nomex stuff?

Nice build Pete, love the recessed mid.

The 830884 has been for a while - last time I checked Madisound said they could get more but you have to order in quantity.

You can still get this similar woofer : http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=264-1098

Just wondering... is that 830884 the same as the 830883 but with a truncated frame? I've got a build on the go that's using the 830883 and it looks like serious business but I haven't had a chance to hear it yet.

the 883 is the 7" version.

PE had great pricing on Peerless when they started handling the entire line but something must have happened and their prices are much higher than Madisound now.

I spoke too soon without checking. Madisound is now high too.

Finally getting back to this one. Took a set of sweeps in room. 6th octave smoothing.

I hope to progress pretty quickly on these.

The smoothness of response exhibited by the SEAS 22TFF is pretty remarkable. Distortion in the range of operation of each driver is equally impressive.

I think I'll target the 350Hz woofer SPL for the overall system sensitivity.

Now I get to go play with the FRD and ZMA in PCD.

Who's a happy boy???

I'm a happy boy!!! :D

Here's what I was able to come up with using 13 parts, including 6 resistors for L-pads and zobels. Now I only have to figure out what I don't have on hand and put in an order.

The mid sure does look intriguing in there! Looks great Ryan & Pete! I hope I get to hear them some day...

was the flange of the TB 75- completely flat or did you have to use a filler?

The younger, NLA TB 50-xxxx 2" dome (I have a pair from the tent sale) has a somewhat curved / shaped flange. I had wanted to do something similar with it and the peerless 6" buyouts they had that day.
But I didn't want to have to bondo it into place....

There's a slight cupping of the TB flange, but we simply mounted it without any kind of treatment for the gap. The frequency of operation for the mid is too low for that small gap to affect things.
