Hi guys,

I was finishing this preamp and pulled this piece from a pile of Mahogany in the garage, but it does not look like any Mahogany I have seen. Larger grain, much lighter, but machines about the same. Then there is the almost reflective property. You cannot see how large and open the grain is because I rasor scrapped the front instead of sanding. Any help would be appreciated.

I was thinking maybe this is still Mahogany, but from the exit of a crotch or something, hence the oddball change in grain half way through the piece. Regardless, it is a pretty stick. Just curious if anyone has insight.

Kind of looks like Koa maybe?

Thank you,

Blair

with that open grain, it sure looks like mahogany to me.

I've seen mahogany like that.

Yeah,

It must be. It was just batched in with quite a few ribbon pieces that have a much darker natural color. Thanks!

Of the commonly known mahoganies like African and Sapele, the pictures look like what I know to be called Genuine Mahogany.

is it soft? Can you easily dent it with fingernail?

No, it is not that soft at all. Not like Rosewood or Birch at all though.
