View Full Version : Line arrays for a wedding dj gig?

My cousin is getting married this summer. I keep giving his bs about it and try to tell him "its not always greener on the other side of the fence" I love the kid just like giving him a hard time. Though he wants me to be his dj.
I dont have a pro audio gear, but I got a friend that would help me out there.
But before I go asking for his gear. I wanted to share this with you guys
I would have to say the dance hall is about 125' by 60' wide.
The question is would 32-3'x5' jvc's in a pair of line arrays make some noise for this? I know it sounds weird but I honestly cant stand anywhere close to these when I have people over outside when having a bbq. They sound good about 20 ft or more away from you. And by adding one of Bill Fitzmauirice horn subs to the low end would help out the lower end.
I notice at wedding, dj's only have a 2 way pair of 12" pro audio speakers for there rig. He wants to spend $500 for a dj and I would do it for nothing for him. If I could save him the money and just go this route I think it would be neat, to show off the line arrays and folded horn. I just wanted to hear what you guys think of this idea?
Congratulations to him!
Next, move this to the pro sound forum, you will get more responses.
lastly, a wedding is a VERY special and important day, don't experiment. Rent some good, trustworthy equipment, and make it as flawless as possible. As far as the kind of equipment, IMHO a couple of 2 way 12s and a single sub would do it. Yes you want dancing, but half the place is not going to be dancing, and will still want to be able to have a conversation at the back half, so raver volumes are not required. I have been to weddings where the music was so loud, 50+% of the guests left in short order. Weddings are very diverse, and grandma doesn't care to hear the latest from (fill in with trendy artist in the genre of your choice). It is far more important that you make it work without a hiccup, then it be perfect sound quality.

Undoubtably. Even a pair of cabs loaded with four sixes/four tweeters and a single sub are up to the task of wedding gigs.

Thanks AMC, your totatly right here it is a day that has to be perfect. And, your right older people dont like loud music for long periods of time. No one wants to yell to a person that 2 ft away from them.
I thought about buying some 12" 2 way active mackie speakers. There easy and doesnt take a ton of stuff to make this work. Adding a sub would be so easy here.
Thanks once again

I've been pondering a pair of these for porch parties this upcoming spring;

I can always do a Zilch upgrade on them if they're not up to snuff.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v641/rjakubin/Yippie.gif

Good things being written about the powered Behringer powered speakers. I think it was these

Good luck with it all.

The only good thing you can say about them is if you left them on your porch overnight and someone stole them you'd be getting the better end of the deal,

Somewhat true. On a porch with 8 to 20 people on any given weekend night, I would be the only one with any knowledge about fidelity. As long the vocals were a reasonable facsimile of the artist they would be happy. They also liked the loud and punchy sound of high sensitivity drivers. If the tweeters sounded honky or a major pain in the ear it would be an easy fix using jackgiffs crossover.
What they didn't care for was very deep bass so the sub was eliminated.
Seemed like just getting to 50hz at F10 was adequate as it caused having a conversation difficult especially with the female audience. Just as the post above with regards to distance from the arrays.

Got a ceiling? A perfect application for a distributed array of in-ceiling speakers. Everybody hears it well, nobody gets blown away.

+1, an underutilized approach if you ask me. Not 'sexy' enough for many people.
Another idea - make a pair of Stentorians and give them as a wedding present. $150 in parts, with sensitivity in the low-mid 90's peak output of 118dB.

I've come to a conclusion that buying a 2 way 12" would do the trick. There are quite a few on the market would love to get a active pair. But I got a crown xls 1000 so that rack amp will power then really well.
The active's are nice but alittle more then I want to spend.
Thanks for everyones advice and thoughts

Nice amp. I see it has RCA inputs. I've hooked up an old Technics receiver to a Behringer A500 amp which had no pre outs using a line level to RCA black box so we could play FM radio tunes to the PA speakers. Rock & Country tunes sounded great. Kids would hook up their Iphones to the Technics via an Aux jack. Talk about hearing songs I've never knew even existed!!!
Lots of fun can be had with those High Effiency speakers...:D

Ruby, it is a nice amp. I got it on ebay for $238 with free shipping. IT was used but it came in the orignal box and all the paper work. I think it was a show room floor model. I tried calling them, but they said "since are prices are so cheap we dont answer the phone." I was kind trying to figure out if it was worth buying. So I bought it anyway and its awesome has a digital crossover built into it. Hell of a deal Id say. I want to buy a 2,ooo or 3,ooo watt crown amp for my sub amp for my house/ djing sub amp.
But then again I thought about making a pair of 12" 2 way pro audio speakers. I love making my own gear. I never made any pro audio 2 ways. Guess it wouldnt be any harder then a regular 2 way speaker.
