Benchtester's projects and tips

  1. WND - a follow up to the LR2 side project

by , 08-14-2010 at 04:05 PM (Benchtester's projects and tips)
Well, it's happened again! My first speaker project has come back to life. Apparently, it is the project that Will Not Die (thus earning the designation "WND"). Some of you will recall that it started over 10 years ago with a Jordan JX92 (pre-"S" version) and a generic 1" silk dome. After a few years of use I gave the speakers to a friend, but years later they were unexpectedly returned. I then converted the tweeter to a Seas DXT as a LR2 waveguide experiment with ...

  2. Iron-on transfer for Printed Circuit Board etching

by , 09-20-2009 at 10:52 AM (Benchtester's projects and tips)
Here are my steps for putting a laser-toner etching resist pattern on a Printed Circuit Board (PCB). It should work with most papers or film, but I like the water-release decal film (http://www.techniks.com/index.htm "Peel-n-Press Wet" for example).

    1) Acetone clean the copper clad board. Then "clean" and roughed the surface with ScotchBrite; at both 0 degrees and 90 degrees. This is provides enough roughness for the toner to mechanically grab the copper. Then ...

  3. side project - metal version of LR2 waveguide

by , 07-26-2009 at 12:45 AM (Benchtester's projects and tips)
This was an accidental project. I am pretty happy with my Scanspeak 2-way project with waveguide and LR2; but I have also enjoyed metal drivers and wondered if they would sound any different. Well the stars aligned and ....

A friend returned my first speaker project. It was a 90's Jordan 92 mid-woofer and a generic silk dome tweeter. I had a pair of Seas DXT waveguide tweeters that fit the existing recess. So, how could I resist? I put in the tweeters and rebuilt the crossovers, ...

  4. Pictures and Graphs

by , 01-17-2009 at 05:32 PM (Benchtester's projects and tips)
Here is a picture of the speaker. I am describing their current condition as "breadboard prototypes" although they are now "daily drivers" (please excuse the pun).

The outer curve of the waveguide was routed with a large table edge profile bit. Unfortunately this left a 3" I.D. hole. I blended the curve to the tweeter surround with black modeling clay.

The first graph shows the on-axis speaker response in magenta, the midrange in brown, the ...

  5. Introduction to a Scanspeak speaker project

by , 01-17-2009 at 01:14 PM (Benchtester's projects and tips)
I have been intermittently involved in DIY audio projects for 10 years. Last year, after an extended break, I decided to get a reference system together. My last big project was a 3-way speaker with analog active crossovers and triamps, all of my own design. Unfortunately, I cannibalized them during successive projects.

My previous 3-way active speakers were pretty good, but had some crossover flaws. So the next project decision was to study existing passive designs, build a passive ...
