  1. Ramblings about DIY speakers

    by , 05-22-2008 at 04:23 PM (DIY vs retail...from a high-end audio retailer's perspective)
Thanks for taking a look at my blog! My first ever. Most folks that have been here a while already know how I feel on these matters, so I apologize in advance if you've heard it all before. Thought I should keep it on-topic about electronics, speakers, etc. without being too opinionated or rude, whether on this subject or some of my other favorite things to rant about. Having strong feelings is the way that I am, so if you see something you don't like or don't agree with, feel free to comment or ...

  2. Some optimization criteria... and some tips...

You have to take the varying impedances, impedance phase, acoustic phase, power response, frequency responses, physical offsets, acoustic offsets, cabinet alignment, baffle step correction and diffraction, listening axes, off-axis responses, position in the room, size of the room, distance to the listener, etc all into account to get a good summation between the drivers used in the cabinets and your ears at your position.

While that is said, there is nothing wrong with experimenting, ...

  3. Tips, Volume 2- The setup!!

Now that you’ve read the tips…
I’ll be using files as I would name them, so you use whatever you want. It just makes things easy to identify.

    Frequency Response (FR):
You either have to measure the FR and impedance (Z) curves, or trace/simulate them to be as accurate as possible. If you can find the manufacturers’ curves, or another DIYer’s curves; and they are reliably measured (Tang Band’s graphs leave a lot to be desired), you can proceed to tracing the raw-FR response. ...

  4. My "canned" spray-paint methods....

Spray-can method! Notes- wipe cabinets down between all steps to remove dust and debris, and wait at least 24 hrs before attempting the next step. Low humidity is a blessing if weather permits. Patience is a virtue with paint, as you have to let it dry. If you reapply before sanding, wait until the paint is dry to sand. It does not have to be set and cured to keep building layers. It does have to dry at least 24 hrs to sand. I use an old T-shirt to wipe off the dust, so to not marre the finish. ...

  5. Issues of normal discussion.... and typical applied thoughts....

    FWIW:
I don't always take harmonic distortion arguments to heart, as they aren't always within the best range for the driver's implementation. If you use a driver well, in the range best applied, most will sound fantastic with optimal xovers, and the distortion might not even be audible. I build projects to experiment, and experience different drivers we have available to us. This is a hobby, and not life-or-death struggles. I don't always understand every nitty-gritty detail discussed, ...
