For sale are a lightly used pair of ScanSpeak 15S/8530K01 woofers. These are some of the best 5" woofers you can buy, bar none. They're in great shape, and shielded for use near CRTs. Just $180/pair. I'm interested in trading for 70VCT or 60VCT power transformers, a calibration mic, a SanDisk Sansa Clip+ mp3 player, high-end headphone drivers, and Harbor Freight gift certificates.

so my receiver does not like 4 ohm speakers, especially when i play movies to loud. now i have an idea, but for some reason i don't think it is a good one, even though it may work? receiver can handle 6 ohm speakers to a deafening volume.

so here is my idea - can you use resistor(s), either multiple small ohm in series, or multiple large ohm in parrel to get the total impedance up to 6 ohm.

let take for example MTM or step it up and say zaph's ZDT3.5, now a 100 watt receiver can you take ten (using quantity of 10 for simple math) mills 12w 20ohm resisters in parrell, or a combination of series parrell? or the same with Dayton 10w resistors?

with my tiny amount of home audio DIY, something just does not seem correct about this.

i am guessing the "correct" way to do it is to use 4 ohm stable separate amps, or a 4 ohm stable AVR (both cost more money than resistors)

thanx in advance as always - feel free to tell me how terrible an idea this is, or it will work, but. all feedback is appreciated and yes my spelling is bad! i even used spell check, and still can't spell:D

190Hz crossover, RS100 flush mounted, all modeled using the Edge by Tolvan for smoothest baffle contribution and drivers leveled using test tones and a RatShack analog sound meter which is accurate enough in said crossover region. Behringer CX3400 crossover in 2-way mode. I only own a jigsaw, so that was the only power tool used in the build. All edges with a large round over by chisel, file and sandpaper as is the cutout for the RS100. The screws you see in the front will be painted black. It's quite an impressive sound to say the least, and I am very pleased though it doesn't get to blistering SPLs comfortably. All for under $200. Measurements to come... well in a few weeks anyways.

I've seen drill press laser guides in the catalogs, and wondered how good they were. Being somewhat jaded, I suspected that they were just junk to separate me from my money. I was wrong.

When I went into a Woodcraft store recently, they had one on display, and it looked better than I imagined. Woodcraft had them on sale for $31, so I thought "what the heck" and added one to my order.

I went home, spent about an hour getting the crosshairs aligned perfectly, and found that it really worked well. It was a worthwhile addition to the shop.
Thought that I'd pass along my experience with it in case someone here has been wondering about them too.

First the question, then the background: Am I missing anything? Am I making reasonable assumptions?

I picked up a pair of MTX ThunderPro2 TP1200's at the Circuit City going out of business sale and because I didn't know what I was doing ended up blowing one of the 12 inch woofers by hooking up an amp with an RMS rating almost twice the 300w peak (150w pgm) rating of the speakers. duh. I'm looking at it as a blessing in disguise though. The cabinets are fine and if I were building my own, I doubt I could do so for the price of $100 each considering the box with hardware, HF driver and horn, and crossover and protection circuitry. Even if I could save $20 or so, my time is worth that at least. The blessing is, that I am upgrading them to handle more power and produce better sound and I'm still paying less than name brand speakers with similar power handling ratings.

I will be pairing them with 18" subs with freq. response down to 32Hz which is good for pro audio so I was looking for good mid-range woofers and settled on the Eminence Delta Pro 12As. I will need to drill new holes because the old speakers had a 6-hole pattern and the 12As have an 8-hole pattern. When I'm done, I should have speakers that sound much better for a total outlay of just over $200. If I happen to blow the tweeters too, I'd like to do an econowave upgrade using the selenium D220Ti's.

fyi, the other equipment in the mix is a QSC GX5 amp and Harbinger HX118S subs powered by a separate amp. By using these same components, I can create a scalable PA system. By splitting the mixer outs I could add power by duplicating the "base" system of (2 modded mains, 2 subs, 2 amps) at about $1800 per unit. I can place the 2nd set along the sides of the venue for long hall style venues as satellites. For this purpose I have already purchased a time delay capable of up to 2.5 sec., the Shark DSP110.

For future systems, I would simply do the upgrade on the ThunderPro's right out of the box and sell the removed speaker on ebay or craigslist.

Alumninum Cone Speakers --A Trend?

I have been attracted to aluminum cone drivers a couple of years ago after I purchased a pair of Infinity's Primus 162(per recommendation from...

I have been attracted to aluminum cone drivers a couple of years ago after I purchased a pair of Infinity's Primus 162(per recommendation from Stereophile magazine). My favorite home speakers now are using Infinity Perfect 6.1 car speaker components. Both the Infinity Perfect 6.1 inch woofer and 1 inch tweeter are made of anodized aluminum for the diamphrams. I believe Infinity's CMMD(Ceramic metal Matrix Diaphrams) patents cover the technology that stiffens the regular Aluminum diaphrams through a controlled anodization process during which the exposed aluminum becomes Aluminum oxide, which is one form of ceramic.
http://www.infinitysystems.com/home/...=US&Region=USA

I like Infinity Perfect 6.1 becasue of its clarity and the low compression and it can fit in a 0.4 ft3 vented box with very good bass(to 40 Hz).

More recently, John Krutke of Zaphaudio came up with a signature 5 inch driver made of aluminum. Then today I noticed Parts Express has listed many new Peerless drivers and the highend series are again made of Aluminum diaphrams.

My question is: Why is aluminum cone becoming so popular today? Any sonic vitrues that aluminum has over other cone materials, such as slit paper(Scanspeak) and treated paper(Fostex and all the majors)?

I am considering using either the Selenium 15PW5 here from partsexpress or I found a Selenium 15PW6 at beachaudio dot com. http://www.beachaudio.com/Selenium/15pw6-p-302706.html
Both companies offer free shipping, have good reviews, and both woofers are about 98 dollars.
Here are the specs for the 15pw6
http://soundmaster.tradernet.eu/prod...0014/15PW6.pdf

I modeled both in WinISD and they both yield a good response in a 4cubic foot ported box at 40 hz.

The major difference I see is that the pw6 has 2x the Xlim... I assume from the bigger moter and extended pole piece for more power handling.
Interestingly the specs suggest the frequency response of the 15pw6 doesn't go very low....but winisd doesn't show that.

the 15pw5 gives a smoother response, especially the smaller dip around 400hz. These will be run from 500hz down.

For the price I can't find any other woofers that come close to the performance. The kappa 15 LF might be the next comparable woofer, but is noticeably more expensive

I am using these for a 3 way with dual 15's per cab, for use with a 30hz cut.

Any thoughts on the importance in the specs? Any other suggestions?

Thanks again for input, gonna ask more of you though.
Looking through various resources I'm finding just how much I don't know, but in truth it's what we learn after we know everything that makes us dangerous!
For getting my feet wet and fingers fluxy, Ive decided to go with the Tri Trix.
I can't seem to beat the price and I can't wait any longer, and I fiqure I can build these to find out about DIY and what sounds good.
I had people suggest a bookshelf/ bassbin set up with seperate plate amps for the subs.My question is will this set up work well with Tri Trix?
Do I need powered subs or can my Denon AVR-3802 be configuered to power them? What do you think the best place to set the X-O for the Tri Trix on the amp 80-100-120? Finally how do I hook up two subs to the Denon, use the preouts and a Y? Have the main L-R channels carry the load sorry to ask but the manual is jibberish to read not much help.

So please HELP!!! Sassy speaker chump

After building many killer speaker designs for myself, friends and family (Raw HT-3 kit, Bargain Mini, Mini Statements, Microbe, Overnight Sensation) and trying my hand at my own design using a HiVI F6 and Tang Band 28-847 which came out terrible and then passable, I've decided to start a new design. I've been reading and occasionally posting on the forum for a couple years so I know just enough to be dangerous.

I have no test instruments but a WT-3 so I will be simulating the design using WinISD, BDS, and PCD. I plan to work slowly and carefully and post my progress regularly and I hope you experts will keep me on the right path without doing work for me. In this manner I feel I can learn something deeper about this art.

What got me started on this project was the low cost of the Jamo drivers at PE. I figgured the drivers were so cheap I might as well try design again so I loaded TS parameters of various Jamo 5.25" drivers into WinIsd to see which "looked" to be the best. In the end I choose the 20306 paper coned woofer. It is 8ohm nominal, worked with either a sealed or vented enclosure and goes relatively deep at Fs of 74hz. I ordered 6.

I then picked the Jamo 20452 1" soft dome tweeter because it is also 8ohm nominal, within 2db efficiency with respect to the woofer, has Fs of about 1750hz which will allow a crossover frequency of around 3.5k to 4k which is in the woofers usable frequency range. I ordered 4. Totsl cost of all 10 drivers: $41.20. How can I loose?

I will be obtaining TS specs for the drivers today using my WT-3. I know there will be some variation in the specs between individual drivers so my first question is should I average the specs between the drivers to use in the simulation software or just pick one represetative sample driver and simulate using it's specific parameters?

Thanks in advance with any help I receive. :)
